Which Team Has The Most PSL Titles In South Africa
Every single PSL fan believes the club they support is the best and with stats as easily available as they are these days, it’s not uncommon for fans to pull out some numbers that will fit their agenda during a banter session.
With that in mind, we have decided to do some digging and compile a countdown to South Africa’s most successful football side in terms of pieces of silverware collected.
BIDVEST WITS (9 TROPHIES)
The Johannesburg side have endured lows such as relegation, and enjoy some highs as well, most notably their maiden league title which they hoisted up in the 2016/17 season.
In between there have been decade long dry spells, but they have managed to collect a respectable number of trophies.
MOROKA SWALLOWS (10)
The Dube Birds may be some distance away from the top flight having suffered three successive relegations, but still remain one of the country’s most decorated sides in terms of trophies accumulated.
Since the club was formed in 1947, they have won one league title, back in 1965 and have collected and have collected nine other domestic titles, the most recent being their 2012 MTN Cup triumph.
Sadly, the 2014/15 season saw them relegated for their first time in history and relegation would be a familiar occurrence for the club who spiralled downhill since.
SUPERSPORT UNITED (11)
The Pretoria side earned some respect among followers of local football and opponents alike as they have risen into becoming one of the more successful sides in the league.
This is thanks to what was a golden era during Gavin Hunt’s tenure where they collected four pieces of silverware, including all three of their league titles.
Now enduring a difficult season, glory seems unlikely in the current season as they seat in the bottom half of the log and the defence of their Nedbank Cup title was halted in the first hurdle.
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS (23)
Supersport’s Pretoria rivals are the most successful club in the country when it comes to league titles in the PSL era.
Pitso Mosimane’s men are currently in pole position in their chase for their eight league title, which would put them four titles ahead of their nearest contenders.
In total, the Chloorkop based outfit has hoisted 23 trophies, which include five in the league’s previous incarnations of the league, the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) and the National Soccer League (NSL), as well 11 cup competitions, with their 2016 CAF Champions League the big one.
ORLANDO PIRATES (34)
The Soweto giants are one of the country’s oldest clubs and are the second most successful with 34 trophies.
The Buccaneers have collected nine league trophies in total, four in the PSL era and have hoisted silverware in 23 domestic cup competitions.
They famously conquered Africa in 1995 and followed that up with a CAF Super Cup triumph the following year.
KAIZER CHIEFS (45)
If Kaizer Chiefs fans tell you their side is the best in the country, they just might have a point.
The trophies may have dried up – with their last taste of silverware coming in 2015 – but they are still significantly ahead of the pack with 53 trophies in total… well, if you don’t count the Macufe Cup and the likes.
Amakhosi are equal with their rivals, Pirates with four PSL trophies but have 12 league titles in total, with eight of those coming in the NSL and the PSL.
They built up a reputation as cup specialists, thanks to successful periods such as “Operation Vat Alles”, and have emerged victorious in 41 other cup competitions.
