Are you passionate about the world of hospitality and eager to embark on a rewarding career journey? Look no further than the National Diploma in Hospitality Management, offered at Pretoria Campus under qualification code NDHM04 and classified at NQF Level 6. In this comprehensive blog post, we’ll take you through everything you need to know about this program and how it can kickstart your hospitality career.

Important Update for New Applicants

Before we dive into the exciting world of hospitality management, here’s a critical update for all prospective students. If you plan to enroll in this qualification for the first time in 2017 or later, take note that the Baccalaureus Technologiae (BTech) option will no longer be available from 2020. Instead, it’s being replaced by qualifications that align with the newly-implemented Higher Education Qualification Sub-Framework. Be sure to check the university’s website for the latest information on these new qualifications.

Program Duration and Structure

The National Diploma in Hospitality Management is a three-year program offered through day classes, with intake available in January only.

Throughout the program, students will gain practical experience by attending activities and practicals in the evenings and on weekends. Due to the unique demands of the hospitality industry, students are required to work for a specified number of weeks at practical training facilities, even during weekends, university holidays, or public holidays. Students must arrange their own transportation to and from these training facilities, which may not always be at the Pretoria or Soshanguve campuses.

Academic Progress and Promotions

Students must maintain a high level of class attendance. They are allowed to be absent for a maximum of only two practical classes per year and must attend at least 85% of theoretical lectures. To progress smoothly, students must pass both the practical and theoretical components of subjects.

Textbooks and Additional Requirements

Students are required to purchase textbooks for their studies. Additionally, several certificates, including a First-Aid Certificate, Opera Short Course Certificate, Preliminary Wine Course Certificate, Wine Service Certificate, and Wines of the World Certificate, must be submitted before the diploma is issued.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

For information regarding Recognition of Prior Learning, equivalence, and status, please refer to Chapter 30 of the Students’ Rules and Regulations.
