UCT Understanding Financial Statements for Directors (JHB) Course

University of Cape Town UCT Understanding Financial Statements for Directors (JHB) Course

GSB Understanding Financial Statements for Directors (JHB)

There is a direct correlation between the level of financially skilled board members and directors, and the positive performance of a company. According to a study by the Institute of Directors in Southern Africa NPC (IoDSA), board composition is one of the most significant governance factors determining a company’s future success.

This is because board members need to have industry skills and financial knowledge to be able to interpret and correctly analyse financial statements in order to properly fulfill their responsibilities as board members. Being able to ask the right questions – and understanding the answers – is fundamental to effective decision-making at board level.

This course runs at the UCT Graduate School of Business’ Johannesburg campus. It is intensive and interactive and participants are shown the financial statements of well-known listed companies to illustrate various important points. Emphasis is placed on understanding the language of financial statements and empowering board members to play a bigger role in the boardroom. Delegates are also introduced to the various resources available to them to aid in understanding their own organisation’s statements.

Is this course for me?

The course is for new, existing or potential board members of any organisation or company that is required to report its financial results in terms of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Participants need no prior knowledge of accounting.
