Sefako Makgatho University SMU Online Application Steps
Before commencing your application, make sure to have all your necessary documents ready ( outlined below ), a working email address and other essential information for student loan application where necessary, such as NSFAS Application.
Undergraduate Applications for the 2025-2026 Academic Year.
The University received more than 44000 applications for approximately 1000 available places. As a result, meeting admission requirements does not guarantee an applicant automatic admission. The University is currently busy with preliminary selections and all applications will go through a rigorous and competitive selection process. Offers will be based on merit and available spaces
Please note:
a. Applicants will be informed about the outcome of pre selection through email or SMS at the beginning of November .
b. Applicants may also check the status of their applications on the SMU website, on the link: https://lifestudent.smu.ac.za/pls/prodi41/w99pkg.mi_login. (use your student number and pin).
c. The University will make final selections after the release of Grade 12 results in January 2022
d. Successful applicants will be given three (3) days to accept or decline the offer.
e. There are limited places in University residence and admission to study at SMU does not guarantee a place in residence. The places are awarded on a first come first served basis and the University is not obliged to provide a place in the residence.
f. You should use the reference/student number in correspondence with the University.
We wish applicants who will be writing Grade 12 examinations, well in their examinations.

In contrast to using the Sefako Makgatho University SMU Online Application Portal, students can opt to apply via hardcopies of the Sefako Makgatho University SMU Application Forms. These can be obtained online on the University’s website or by directly visiting the Admissions Office. The following are the costs of the application forms
- Undergraduate applications from South Africa and SADC region: R100
- Undergraduate applications from outside of the SADC region: R300
Sefako Makgatho University SMU Admission Requirements
Undergraduate Diploma Study
The minimum requirement for admission to undergraduate diploma study is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by Umalusi with an achievement rating of 3 (Moderate Achievement, 40-49%) or better in 4 recognised NSC 20-credit subjects.

Bachelor’s Degree Study
To be eligible for admission to degree study, applicants need to meet minimum requirements for eligibility:
- Applicants holding a South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) need to pass a minimum of 4 subjects at a rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50-59%) or better in any four 20-credit NSC subjects.
- Applicants holding a South African Senior Certificate need matriculation endorsement.
- Applicants holding non-South African school-leaving certificates must qualify for a matriculation exemption certificate.

- South African applicants will need an ID number. Foreign applicants will need their passport number.
- Once you receive your student number from Sefako Makgatho University SMU, you will need to pay the application fee.

PLEASE NOTE:
- Your application will not be processed if you have not submitted all the required applicable documentation mentioned above.
- If you have not submitted the required documentation within a period of two months, unfortunately your application will not be considered.
- The University receives more applications than it can accommodate and meeting admissions requirements does not guarantee admission.
- There are limited places in University residence and admission to study at SMU does not guarantee a place in residence. The places are awarded on a first come first served basis and the University is not obliged to provide a place in the residence.
- All non-South African citizens and non-permanent residents are required to obtain a study permit prior to registering as students. Applications for study permits should be submitted to the South African Home Affairs Consulate or High Commissioner in your country of residence/origin, and it would be issued in favour of Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University and to be submitted during registration.
- Application forms submitted after the closing dates will not be considered.

Who uses them and how?
