Landlocked Lesotho, often known as the Kingdom of Lesotho, is surrounded by South Africa. The tallest mountains in Southern Africa are found there, and it is located in the Maloti Mountains. It has a population of over 2 million and a land area of more than 30,000 km2 (11,600 sq mi)

.It was once known as Basutoland, a British Crown colony that proclaimed its independence from the UK on October 4, 1966. It is a fully autonomous state and a part of the African Union, the Southern African Development Community, the Commonwealth of Nations, and the United Nations. “Land of the Sotho” is how Lesotho’s name is loosely translated.

South of Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Southern Africa is the southernmost part of the African continent. The vast region of Africa south of the enormous Congo River basin is where the place is physically located. The Zambezi River is the most well-known of the several river systems in Southern Africa. The Zambezi River originates in the northwest of Zambia and runs through western Angola to the Indian Ocean on the Mozambican coast. The Zambezi River passes over the impressive Victoria Falls on its route to the boundary between Zambia and Zimbabwe. One of the biggest waterfalls in the world, Victoria Falls is a popular destination for travelers in the area.

Madagascar is excluded from Southern Africa, the southernmost part of the African continent, because of its unique language and cultural heritage. Countries in Southern Africa include

Angola

Botswana

Lesotho

Malawi

Mozambique

Namibia

South Africa

Swaziland

Zambia and

Zimbabwe

Most of South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana are covered by undulating plateaus, while uplands exist in Zambia and Zimbabwe. Mountain ranges and escarpments line the high ground in northern Mozambique, South Africa, Namibia, Angola, and along the border with Zimbabwe. The Indian Ocean coasts are contiguous with the coastal mountains and escarpments in Mozambique and the Atlantic coasts in Angola and Namibia. Coastal plains border the Indian Ocean in Mozambique and the Atlantic in Angola and Namibia.
