World rankings rise for Monash
Monash remains in the 91-100 band with a rank of 91, representing an improvement of eight places since 2012.
One of just three Go8 universities to increase its ranking, the University has performed strongly across almost every category, climbing 87 places in four years.
Along with the overall top 400 league table, Times Higher Education has also ranked the top 100 institutions by discipline in Engineering and Technology; Social Sciences; Physicals Sciences; Life Sciences; Arts and Humanities; and Clinical, Pre-clinical and Health.
Monash is ranked in the top 50 in the world in three disciplines – Clinical, Pre-Clinical and Health (38), Arts and Humanities (45) and Engineering (49 in the world and third in Australia).
The top 100 universities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings represent just 0.5 per cent of the world’s higher education institutions.
The results were released at the Times Higher Education World Academic Summit in Singapore, where Monash Vice-Chancellor Professor Ed Byrne presented at a panel session on ‘Building a World Class University’.
Professor Byrne detailed Monash University’s recent rise in the global university rankings, which he attributes to a combination of a consistent focus on excellence in research and teaching, openness to international engagement, and a commitment to making a positive impact in the community.
“This rise in our position is a welcome reflection of the hard work Monash staff have put in over recent years. It is a vindication of our belief that a globalised age requires universities to be globally networked if they are to deliver top-quality research and education,” Professor Byrne said.
Editor-at-Large and Rankings Editor with Times Higher Education, Phil Baty, highlighted Monash University’s rise at the Summit.
“Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings use a trusted range of 13 rigorous performance indicators and are the only global rankings to judge world-class research institutions against all of their core activities – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook,” Mr Baty said.
“So Monash’s continued rise up the rankings is particularly impressive, demonstrating strength right across the board on a wide range of metrics. That Monash has achieved such impressive results against a more gloomy picture for Australia as a whole is particularly impressive, and is a testament to its bold internationalisation strategy, and its clear focus on research performance.”
