What is the Notice Period for Resignation in South Africa?

Seven days

If the worker has been working there for six months or less, one week; if the person has worked for more than six months but not more than a year, two weeks; if they have been there for a year or longer, four weeks.

How does the South African resignation process work?

A notice of termination of the work relationship, which includes a resignation, must be made in writing, according to Section 37 (4) (a) of the BCEA. The employee’s resignation is a unilateral action, thus the employer is not required to accept it.

Can a business refuse a resignation?

It is not feasible, no. Employees can choose to resign, and an employer cannot coerce them into doing so. A resignation letter must be accepted by the employer. If he does, he might face criminal charges.

Can you quit and depart right away?

Although it’s customary to provide two weeks’ notice when quitting a job, there are several instances in which you might need to leave a company right away. Check your employment contract—if you have one—before you quit to ensure you are aware of the consequences of leaving without giving notice.

Is it OK to quit through email?

The letter of resignation is a formal letter having legal significance. Not so with a resignation email. The official letter will serve as evidence that you have given two weeks’ notice as required by your contract, safeguard your employee benefits in the event of a disagreement, and serve as your record of doing so.

Do you inform your management or human resources of your resignation?

While no two workplaces are same, in most situations you’ll give your supervisor a letter of resignation and then deal with HR to wrap up your employment there.

Should I consult with my manager before quitting?

Keep in mind that you are not required to inform anybody.

It is entirely up to you whether or not to inform your employer that you could be quitting your position.
