You need to have a valid driver’s license to drive in South Africa. You can get an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country if you are visiting the country for less than three months. If you are staying longer than three months, then you will need to apply for a local driver’s license.

The following documents are needed to get a local driver’s license: An application for a driver’s license, vehicle registration certificate, and insurance certificate.

If you are under the age of 25, then you will also need your parent or legal guardian to sign the forms.

A photograph showing your face from both the front and side view.

Proof of residency such as an electricity bill or bank statement that shows your name and current address in South Africa.

You must also show proof of your country of origin and your South African address. A passport from your country of origin or a Current Travel Document (C-Card) from the Department of Home Affairs, a birth certificate or marriage certificate that shows your name and date of birth in your country of origin.

Is my Zimbabwe driving licence valid in South Africa?

The Zimbabwean driving licence is valid in South Africa. This means that the holder of this licence may drive a vehicle in South Africa with no restrictions. It is possible because of regulations stipulated in110 (1) of the National Road Traffic Regulations that say that foreign-issued driving licenses are valid in South Africa.
