Mafadi is the highest point in South Africa, measuring 2,422 metres. It is located in the Drakensberg mountain range and is part of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park. At the top of Mafadi is a series of peaks with names including The Devil’s Tongue and The Lion’s Head. The area around Mafadi was first explored by Europeans in 1859 when Francis Galton and his party became the first to reach its summit.

It was created by volcanic activity and it is a stratovolcano that has shattered into three parts, namely, the north-western side, the south-eastern side, and the central part. The mountain range that it sits on is called the Amatole Mountains which are situated north of East London in South Africa.
