Welkom is a town in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, about 160 kilometres northeast of Bloemfontein.. It was established in 1820 as the capital of the Ciskei people, who were under British colonial rule at the time. Directly translated from the Afrikaans or Dutch, Welkom means ‘welcome’, and the town emerged after the discovery of gold in the area.
