Absinthe is a psychoactive alcoholic beverage that contains wormwood, an herb that has been used as a medicinal and culinary herb for centuries. It was first produced in Switzerland in the late 18th century.
Absinthe is a distilled spirit, traditionally made from an infusion of the flowers, leaves, and green stems of Artemisia absinthium or grand wormwood (“Artemisia absinthium”), along with other herbs including green anise, sweet fennel, coriander seed, and caraway seed. With its high alcohol content (usually at least 40% ABV), it contains notable levels of thujone and other plant chemicals which create its characteristic psychoactive effects.
Absinthe is not to be confused with the liqueur Martini vermouth or the similarly named liquor Absente which are both clear spirits.
