Underberg is an administrative town in the Mzimkulu River valley of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, amid a dairy and cow agricultural settlement. It is located in the foothills of the southern Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal, at the foot of the 1,904 m Hlogoma Peak (place of echoes). Underberg was founded in 1917, when the railway from Pietermaritzburg arrived. It is a vital economic hub for the region’s agricultural industry, providing various support services. It also serves as a trading post for those traveling down the neighboring Sani Pass from Lesotho.
The town also houses provincial offices for the ministries of Social Welfare and Transportation, as well as a clinic and the municipal library. The Underberg School provides preschool and primary education. The Catholic Church, Congregational Church, The Underberg Baptist Church, and Highlands Church International are among the churches in town.
Tourism is the area’s second largest industry, behind farming. As a gateway to the Southern Drakensberg, the area surrounding Underberg offers a wide range of tourism opportunities. The Southern Drakensberg Community Tourism Organisation was founded in 2007 by the community to promote tourism under the Southern Berg Escape brand. Underberg has a wide range of accommodation and dining options, most of which are casual and suitable for most tastes.
Along with Dullstroom, Mpumalanga, the Underberg district is one of South Africa’s top trout fly fishing sites. Splashy Fen, an annual outdoor music festival near Underberg, is held on a farm. The globally recognized Sani2C Mountain Bike Race begins in Underberg each year, and the arduous Joberg2C MTB Race passes through along the same route on Day 6. Paddlers from all over the world come each year for the Drak Challenge canoe race on the Mzimkulu river.
