Phasing Out of FEBE Diplomas and BTech Programs:

  • National Diplomas and BTech Phase-Out:
    • The final intake for FEBE Diploma programs (excluding HEQSF aligned Quality and Operations Management diplomas) occurred in 2016. Students must complete these qualifications by 2020.
    • BTech programs had their last intake in January 2019, in accordance with national legislation. These programs must also be completed by 2020.

    • The shift marks a gradual phase-out of most National Diploma and BTech programs.

BEngTech Program Features:

  • Industry-Oriented Focus:
    • The BEngTech programs emphasize general engineering principles and applications, tailored to meet industry needs.
    • These qualifications are designed to build foundational knowledge and skills for specialization and career progression.
  • Career and Professional Advancements:
    • Graduates are prepared for engineering professions and are eligible for registration as Professional Engineering Technologists with ECSA.
    • The BEngTech serves as an entry point for NQF level 8 programs, including BEngTech (Honours) and Postgraduate Diplomas, leading to Master’s Programs.
  • Exit-Level Outcomes:
    • The BEngTech programs are aligned with ECSA’s eleven exit level outcomes, covering aspects from problem-solving and engineering design to professionalism and engineering management.

  • Three-Year BEngTech:
    • A comprehensive range of BEngTech Degrees, pioneering in South Africa, focusing on practical and industry-relevant engineering technology.
  • Three-Year Bachelor’s Degrees:
    • Bachelor of Construction, Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning, and Bachelor of Mine Surveying, focusing on specialized fields within the built environment.
  • Four-Year BEng Degrees:
    • Focused on Engineering Science Qualifications, offering a deeper dive into engineering principles and applications.
