With Alstom holding a 61% stake, alongside 30% by Ubumbano Rail and 9% by New Africa Rail, Gibela’s journey encompasses black ownership and innovation.
On the Tracks of Progress
Gibela’s pioneering efforts emerged as a response to the need for a new, modern metro fleet in 2013. With the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) setting the course, Gibela embarked on a mission to infuse 600 modern commuter passenger trains into the South African rail network over a span of ten years.
Gibela Bursary 2025-2026: Fostering Potential
Gibela is now opening its doors for applications to its bursary program for the academic year 2025-2026. This program envisions supporting studies at various universities, universities of technology, and TVET colleges. The areas of study covered span from Boiler Makers to Computer Science, underscoring Gibela’s commitment to diverse education paths.

Full coverage for tuition fees, book allowances, accommodation, meals, and more awaits successful applicants. Bursaries are granted for one year and can be renewed based on academic performance.
The Right Tracks: Eligibility Criteria
Ensure you meet the criteria before proceeding with your application:
TVET Students:
- South African citizenship
- Matric completion in (the previous academic year)
- Minimum level 4 results in Mathematics, Science, and English in Matric
- Intention to study at an accredited TVET institution
- Demonstrated academic potential and financial need
- N3 and N4 students can also apply
University and University of Technology Students:
- South African citizenship
- Matric completion in (the previous academic year)
- Minimum level 6 results in Mathematics, Physical Science, and Accounting in Matric
- Minimum level 5 result in English in Matric
- Intention to study at an accredited University or University of Technology
- Demonstrated academic potential and financial need
- Current 1st and 2nd-year students can also apply

Mark 31st January 2025-2026 as the closing date for applications. Remember, applications submitted after this date will not be considered.
