Without PlayStation Plus, only free-to-play games can be played online. Fortunately, many of today’s most popular games, such as Genshin Impact, Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone, the aforementioned Fortnite, and others, are all free to play. You can play these games as long as you have an internet connection; there is no need for a paid subscription!
Which games can I play online if I don’t have PS Plus?
On PlayStation, multiplayer games are classified as either premium (or paid) games that you purchase or free-to-play games. The former can include games like Call of Duty: Vanguard, whereas the latter can include ongoing games like Fortnite.
When will PS Plus no longer be required for online gaming?
It’s unclear whether Sony will remove PlayStation Plus as a requirement for online play. In recent years, the service has expanded far beyond online and multiplayer connectivity. However, it is still a significant revenue generator and is used to subsidize the PlayStation Network.
Given the amount of revenue it generates, we don’t expect PS Plus to be phased out of online gameplay anytime soon, unless drastic changes occur in the future. This is especially true given how PlayStation Plus has been restructured into multiple tiers, with online pay serving as the “base” tier.
What if I purchase PS Plus and then cancel my subscription?
So long as your membership is active, you can only play online multiplayer in games that require it. You will no longer be able to play online multiplayer if you cancel your subscription (except in free-to-play titles).
