   CAT College Administration and Technical (Pty) Ltd was founded in 2008 as a technical institute dedicated to providing professional and vocational education to the local community. From these modest beginnings we have grown to be the largest dual-sector (higher education and vocational educational and training) provider in South Africa, Throughout our 3-year history, our aims have remained essentially the same: to ‘create and disseminate knowledge to meet the needs of industry and the community and foster in students the skills and passion to contribute to and engage with the world’1 CAT’s Learning and Teaching Policy celebrates this heritage and re-affirms the College’s commitment to its fundamental mission.

2. Scope

CAT College Administration and Technical (Pty) Ltd Learning and Teaching policy is a companion paper to the Academic that was passed by Council in December, 2009. The Academic Plan contains action plans in relation to:

        For its part, the Learning and Teaching policy excerpts from this list of initiatives those that relate specifically to learning and teaching activities. The Learning and Teaching policy also provides some of the philosophical and pedagogical underpinnings of learning and teaching at CAT that were not contained within the Academic Plan. At the core of the Academic Plan and the Learning and Teaching policy are four defining objectives: to produce work-ready graduates with a hunger for life-long learning, to ensure student satisfaction, to provide a ‘international standards’ for graduates, and to maximise the College’s existing dual-sector advantage. In explicating this set of objectives, and how we can best achieve them, the Learning and              Teaching policy acts as both a reference for our students and an operational blueprint for the College. It aims to provide a framework for building on our existing strengths while remaining highly responsive to the requirements of our students, the economy and the world of work into which our students will graduate.

2. Our Approach to Learning and Teaching

CAT College Administration and Technical (Pty) Ltd vision for learning and teaching is built on an understanding that learning is an active, participatory process. Our approach to education is also characterised by a commitment to flexible study pathways which maximise choice across and within the Higher Education (HE) and Further education (FE) sectors and between study and work, the provision of work-integrated and work-relevant education that produces graduates who are capable of working and contributing to communities internationally. Curricula at CAT are designed to enable graduates to develop the ability to deal effectively with novel situations in a changing work and social world. Programs at CAT include:

An explicit capability (HE) or competency (FE) approach where learning of discipline-, profession- or industry-specific knowledge, abilities and skills is structured throughout the whole program and opportunities to integrate this learning in work- or community-relevant learning activities is provided; and,

The alignment of learning outcomes with supportive learning activities, formative and summative assessment that is criterion referenced and valid (i.e. genuinely measures what it purports to measure).

Pedagogy at CAT is characterised by a learning centred approach which recognises that the ultimate test of the effectiveness of learning and teaching is whether it has helped students to learn. Pedagogy at CAT is also founded upon recognition and respect for student diversity so that learning opportunities cater for all, including those who may be disadvantaged. More specifically, we recognise that:

Students enter CAT with a wealth of experience and understanding and that our learning and teaching builds upon this.

Learning and teaching is always a multilayered experience between teacher and students, students and students, students and teacher where all parties learn.

General Education and Training

General Education and Training refers to education and training provided at primary and secondaryschool level, from grade R to 9. It also includes Adult Basic Education and Training. The registration of private or independent institutions offering general education and training is the competence of theprovincial education departments. The registration of these institutions is in terms of the South AfricanSchools Act, 1996 (Act No. 84 of 1996

Further Education and Training

Further Education and Training refers to education and training provided from Grades 10 to 12,including career-oriented education and training offered in technical colleges, community colleges andprivate colleges. Private institutions offering further education and training programmes must registerwith the Department of Education in accordance with the Further Education and Training CollegesAct, 2006 (Act No 16 of 2006).

Higher Education and Training

Higher Education and Training is also referred to as tertiary education. The higher education band provides the highest level of education. Entry into higher education is through a Grade 12 pass or Grade 12 pass with exemption. Private institutions offering higher education must register with the Department of Education in accordance with the Higher Education Act, 1997 (Act No 101 of 1997).

ENROLMENT

1. Prospective learners can register online via our website www.catcollege.co.za
2. Career guidance to prospective learners takes place before registration on site.
3. Bursaries and discounts are offered throughout CAT branches.
4. Once enrolled at C.A.T College learners are strictly bound by the rules and regulations of the institution. If a student
withdraws, he/she is liable to pay 10% of the total fee and R500 administration fee subject to authorization from the Senior
Director which must be done one week prior to the commencement of the course.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT

CAT College Administration and Technical (Pty) Ltd has a suitable academic calendar that deals with lecturing of Computer, Administration, Health Science and Engineering Studies which are accredited by various recognized bodies. The College also offers entertainment activities (music & dance; sports, debate, culture & Arts). Currently C.A.T College language of instruction is English. All our branches are equipped with Libraries and Computer Laboratories (with internet). Small classrooms and supportive classes always available.

Academic fee structure: How does it work

1. Application Fee
1.1  applicants pay an application fee of R300 directly to the college account.
1.2 Returning students to CAT pay an application fee of R300 directly to the College.
1.3 The application fee is non-refundable and does not form part of the tuition fees at the CAT College.

2. Acceptance of Offer Fee:
If your application is successful, you will be asked to pay 1500 fee as a first instalment. If you decide to accept the offer you must make a payment of R2000 (for 2013) to the College in order to secure your place. This Acceptance of Offer fee is refundable 2013.

3. Balance of Fees (per year )
After registration the actual costs for tuition fees for the first semester will be calculated. The R1500 paid will be subtracted from the total and an account for the balance will be given to you. The balance of the year fees must be paid before the end of November, college will give you easy payment options so the balance you can pay easy monthly instalments as agreed.

4. Bursaries or Loans
Students who have any form of bursary or loan must ensure that the funding is available at the time of registration. Proof of award must be submitted at the Student Funding Centre before registration. Students who have received financial assistance from the college must complete their load documentation at the Student Funding Centre before registration

Cost of study
The cost of College education will vary according to individual circumstances, and students are advised to calculate carefully the total financial provision they must make. The cost of a year at the CAT College in 2013 should between R9900 and R20,000.

You will also need to provide for stationery and equipment, personal expenses, laundry, transport, sports, subscriptions, medical expenses and, residence during short vacations.
When deciding where to study you should enquire about the cost of study and compare costs of different colleges in surrounding areas. This will help you make realistic decisions to suit your financial means.

Mode of payment
1. Payment may be made by means of cheque or postal orders, direct deposit into the relevant College Banking Accounts, or by credit card.
2. The College offers a payment by instalment facility, by means of a debit order against a bank account, for students who are self-funded. Application may be made at the respective Student Fees Offices on each campus as soon as possible after selection and no later than at least a week before registration
