Eagle Flight Academy, a premier SACAA-accredited flight school in South Africa, offers comprehensive pilot training courses for single and multi-engine aircraft and more.

Private Pilot License (PPL-A): This license allows you to be the pilot-in-command of an aircraft for non-commercial purposes. The International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) sets the global standards for obtaining this license, though specific requirements can vary by country. To acquire a PPL in South Africa, you need:

  • A minimum of 45 hours of flight time, as per ICAO guidelines (40 hours in most countries).
  • Successful completion of eight written exams.
  • An extensive solo cross-country flight with a minimum cumulative solo flight time of 15 hours.
  • Passing a flight test or check ride, which includes an oral exam, demonstrating your flying skills to an examiner.
  • You must be at least 17 years old to obtain a PPL.

Requirements for Enrolment:

  1. Minimum age of 15 for a student pilot license and solo flying.
  2. Minimum age of 17 for obtaining a PPL.
  3. Possession of a Class 2 or higher medical license (we can arrange this).
  4. A valid student pilot license (we can arrange this).
  5. Completion of at least 45 hours of flight time as the pilot of an airplane.
  6. Obtaining a restricted radio certificate (we can arrange this).

Exams to be Passed:

  • Principles of Flight
  • Air Law
  • Aviation Meteorology
  • Engines, Airframes & Instruments
  • General Navigation
  • Human Performance
  • Flight Planning and Performance
  • Restricted Radio

Each exam consists of approximately 30 multiple-choice questions, with a pass mark of 75%. These exams are conducted at our flight academy.

Flight Time Requirements:

A minimum of 25 hours of dual flying, including at least 5 hours of instrument instruction.

A minimum of 15 hours of solo flying, including at least 5 hours of cross-country flight time. This includes a triangular cross-country flight of at least 150 nautical miles, with one leg being no less than 50 nautical miles from the base and full-stop landings at two different aerodromes away from the base.

Up to 5 hours of dual instruction may be completed in an approved Flight Simulation Training Device (FSTD).

Completion of flying exercises 1 to 19.
