FIFA to Migrate NFT Platform to Ethereum-Compatible Blockchain in Strategic Web3 Shift
FIFA Phases Out Algorand, Launches Proprietary EVM-Compatible Blockchain for NFTs
ZURICH, April 30, 2025 — In a landmark move that underscores its growing stake in Web3 innovation, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) announced it will launch its own Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible blockchain. This proprietary platform will host its official NFT collection, FIFA Collect, and serve as the foundation for future blockchain-based fan experiences.
The rollout marks the end of FIFA’s current partnership with Algorand, the blockchain that has powered its NFT activity since inception. According to FIFA, the transition to the new FIFA Blockchain is driven by the need for greater performance, scalability, and broader integration with the evolving Ethereum ecosystem.
NFT Migration Begins May 20 — MetaMask and WalletConnect to Replace Pera and Defly
FIFA stated that the migration of FIFA Collect will begin no earlier than May 20, with all existing collectibles set to transition to the new blockchain. Current NFT holders will be provided with clear, step-by-step instructions, but no immediate action is required.
After the migration:
-
External wallets like Pera and Defly will no longer be supported.
-
Users will need to connect using MetaMask or other EVM-compatible wallets via WalletConnect.
-
Listed NFTs will be automatically transferred, unless delisted manually prior to the migration date.
“We’re moving to an infrastructure designed for the future of digital collectibles,” FIFA’s tech team noted in the official announcement.
FIFA Rivals and Web3 Expansion Set the Stage for Fan Engagement at Scale
FIFA’s deeper foray into blockchain technology comes amid its expanding Web3 and gaming initiatives.
Following its collaboration with Modex for the 2023 Club World Cup NFT drop, FIFA partnered in November 2024 with Mythical Games to develop FIFA Rivals—a mobile-first, play-to-own football game for iOS and Android.
-
FIFA Rivals will launch a pre-release in May 2025.
-
The full release is scheduled for Summer 2025, allowing fans to manage clubs and engage in live competitions.
According to John Linden, CEO of Mythical Games, over 100 million players could flock to the title, citing the success of NFL Rivals, which already boasts 6 million+ users despite targeting a much smaller fanbase.
“FIFA’s global reach combined with play-to-own dynamics creates an unprecedented opportunity to bring sports fandom into the digital era,” said Linden.
From Collectibles to Ecosystems: FIFA Embraces Web3 Momentum
FIFA’s transition from Algorand to its own EVM chain is not just a technical upgrade—it signals a strategic pivot to owning and controlling its digital economy. With scalability and Ethereum interoperability at its core, the move positions FIFA to compete in the high-growth sectors of Web3 gaming, virtual property, and fan tokenization.
The decision also reflects a broader industry trend: major sports organizations are investing heavily in blockchain infrastructure, hoping to convert digital engagement into long-term brand equity and revenue.
