Admission Guidelines for Nursing Programmes at Free State School of Nursing
A. Diploma in Nursing R171 – Eligibility Requirements
Eligibility for the prestigious Diploma in Nursing at Free State School of Nursing is established by the following regulatory standards:

- The National Department of Health’s policy on Nursing Education and Training.
- SANC 2013 Diploma in Nursing Qualification Framework.
For Graduates Post-2008 (Senior Certificate Holders):
- Possession of a National Senior Certificate (NSC), verified by Umalusi, encompassing six designated subjects or an equivalent qualification.
- Minimum Academic Point Score (APS) of 25 across six subjects, including Life Orientation (scored as one point regardless of the mark achieved).
- Mandatory Subjects:
- English: Achieving a minimum of Level 4 (50-59%).
- Mathematical Literacy: Minimum Level 4 (50-59%).
- Life Sciences: Minimum Level 4 (50-59%).
- Preferred Competencies:
- Proficiency in Computer Literacy at a minimum of Grade 9 level.
- Physical Science will be an advantageous qualification.
For Graduates Pre-2008 (Senior Certificate Holders):
- A Matriculation Exemption or equivalent qualification.
- An M-Score of 23 or higher from a maximum of 6 subjects.
- Mandatory Subjects:
- English: Higher Grade (HG) minimum 50% (E Symbol) or Standard Grade (SG) 60% (D Symbol) and above.
- Biology or Physiology: HG (50% and above) or SG (60% and above).
- Mathematics: HG (40%) / SG (50%) or Commercial Mathematics SG (50% and above).
- Preferred Competencies:
- Physical Science.
B. Higher Certificate in Auxiliary Nursing R169 – Eligibility Requirements
Eligibility criteria for applicants are as follows:
For Applicants Post-2008:
- An NSC or equivalent certificate.
- A minimum APS of 23.
- Level 4 achievement in English, Life Science, and Mathematical Literacy.
- Candidates with Computer Literacy and Physical Science will be preferred.
For Applicants Pre-2008:
- A Matric Certificate or equivalent qualification.
- An M-Score of 20 or above.
- Standard Grade English with a minimum of 50% (D symbol).
- Biology or Physiology.
- Candidates with Mathematics and Physical Science will be preferred.
C. Advanced Diploma in Midwifery R1497 – Eligibility Requirements
Prospective candidates must satisfy the following criteria:
- A Matric Certificate or an equivalent qualification.
- A Diploma in Nursing at an NQF level 6.
- Registration as a General Nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
Calculating Admission Scores
- APS (Post-2008): Your Grade 12 results are translated into an Admission Point Score (APS) based on the achievement levels and corresponding percentages.
- M-Score (Pre-2008): Scores are assigned based on the symbols achieved in Higher Grade (HG) and Standard Grade (SG) subjects.
