ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – HAW & INGLIS (H&I)
Haw & Inglis, established in 1984, is a South African construction company based in the Western Cape, with operations across the country. The company specializes in large and complex construction projects, including building construction, road construction, road rehabilitation, and infrastructure development. Haw & Inglis achieved a BBBEE Level 2 Contributor status in 2010.
H&I International is a UK-based business established with the same high standards as South Africa’s Haw & Inglis Group. The company’s services and activities encompass various sectors, including mining, water supply and waste management, commercial and residential property development, transportation (aviation, marine, road, and rail), renewable energy, healthcare, and leisure and hospitality.
ABOUT THE H&I BURSARY & GAP YEAR PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
Haw & Inglis is offering a gap year program and bursary program for the 2024 and 2025 academic years.
During the Matric gap year program in 2024-2025, students will engage in various Civil Engineering and Construction disciplines, including:
- Commercial Building
- Marine, Water, and Sanitation
- New Road Construction and Rehabilitation
- Renewable Energy
- Structural Concrete Works
- Solar Power
Upon completing the Matric gap year program, students will enter the bursary program in 2025 to study the following fields (BSc / BEng / BEng Tech / Diploma):
- Civil Engineering
- Construction
- Construction Management
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE HAW & INGLIS BURSARY & GAP YEAR PROGRAMME
Applicants must meet the following minimum entry criteria:
Matric gap year program (2024-2025):
- South African citizenship
- Currently in Matric in 2023
- Minimum of 60% for Pure Mathematics/Technical Mathematics and Physical Science
- Willingness to take a “gap year” in 2024-2025
- Willingness to relocate anywhere in South Africa for the duration of the 2024-2025 program
- Intention to study towards a Civil Engineering or Construction qualification in 2025
- Acceptance into one of the sponsored institutions: University of Cape Town (UCT), Stellenbosch University (SU), University of Pretoria (UP), University of Johannesburg (UJ), University of Witwatersrand (Wits), Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), Nelson Mandela University (NMU)
Bursary program (2025):
- Completion of the Matric gap year program and meeting criteria for overall site performance during the gap year
- Acceptance into one of the Civil Engineering or Construction study programs listed above for the 2025 academic year
- Acceptance into one of the sponsored institutions listed above (UCT / SU / UP / UJ / Wits / CPUT / NMU)

The closing date for the Haw & Inglis Bursary and Gap Year Program is 30 August. Ensure that you submit your application before this date, as late applications will not be accepted.
