How Can You Deposit a Check in South Africa

Online Check Depositing

Check to see if your bank accepts online deposits. Most national banks provide this service, but some local banks do not. You should be able to find information about this feature on the website of your bank.

Some financial institutions only provide remote check deposit capture to customers who have business checking accounts or accounts with high minimum balance requirements.

Check with your bank to see what they require. Other banks may require you to pass credit checks before you can use this feature.

Enroll in the program: You may be required to enroll in the online depositing program by your bank. This step is usually required if your bank requires you to first pass a credit check.

Locate a scanner: While it is generally safer to use a scanner at home, you can also use a scanner at a library or at work. Simply put, you must be able to scan the check into your computer. The bank will read the check using this scan, so it must be clear.

Endorse your check: Most banks require you to sign the back of the check in order to endorse it. Sign in the endorsement area on the back of the check.

Others require you to enter the account number for the account into which you want to deposit the check. This number is also written on the back of the check in the designated endorsement area.

Depending on the bank, you may also need to enter your member number. Digital Federal Credit Union, for example, requires a member number.

Select the appropriate account: Navigate to your bank’s website. Please sign in to your account. Locate the deposit online section of the website, which is typically located under the account tools. Choose the account to which you want to deposit the check from a drop-down menu.

Select a scanner: Most banks will require you to select a scanner. Typically, you will only have one scanner connected to your computer, so this decision should be simple. If you have more than one scanner, make sure you select the correct one and that it is turned on. The name can be found on the front or top of the scanner.

Scan the check: Scan both the front and back of the check with your scanner. Normally, the scan will be initiated by the bank’s software as you progress through the process. Some banks may require that the checks be perfectly square on the scanner, so you may need to adjust or retake the scan in accordance with your bank’s guidelines. In fact, some banking software will analyze the image before you submit it to ensure that it is correct.

While logged in, some banks require that your computer be connected to the scanner. In other words, you can’t photograph the check and save it for later.

Some banks, on the other hand, allow you to upload images of checks from the past. Check your bank account to see what your bank permits.

Add the amount: While not all banks require it, you may be asked to type it in. Simply enter the amount of the check into the box.

Submit the form: The majority of checks are reviewed after they are submitted. Some banks deposit the funds the following day, while others do so immediately. Check with your bank to find out how long it takes to credit your account.

If yours does not automatically deposit, you will most likely need to wait for a confirmation email.

If you do not receive an email, please check your account for the deposit. If it is not present, call your bank.

Void and destroy the check: Different banks have different recommendations for what to do with the check once you’ve completed the transaction. Some people prefer that you write “void” on the check, while others prefer “processed.” Wait for confirmation that the check has been deposited before proceeding with this step. Furthermore, some banks require that you keep the check for at least two months before destroying it.

Is it possible to upload a picture of a check to deposit?

Remote check depositing allows customers to save time. Instead of bringing a check to the bank, mobile check deposit allows customers to use their smartphones to take a picture of the front and back of a check and deposit it through a bank’s mobile app.
