Eligibility requirements
You must be under 40 years old at the time of the commencement of training. If you are over 40, you can apply for a waiver. To apply for a waiver, complete this form and send it to [email protected]
The following conditions must be met in order for an application for exemption from being under 40 years old to be considered:
- The applicant must have passed Grade 12 with at least 50% aggregate marks or its equivalent;
- The applicant is able to demonstrate proficiency in English (as specified below);
- The applicant has not been convicted of any criminal offence involving dishonesty or fraud;
- There are no adverse security reports available on record.

What is the recommended height for an air hostess?
- The minimum height requirement of 1.58 m for females and 1.65m for males are set by the airlines themselves, not just South African Airways (SAA). Check with your preferred airline before applying to see which height requirements they have in place.
- If you are not tall enough to qualify as an air hostess, but would still like to get a job in aviation, there are other options available! You can join the South African Air Force or the South African Army where there is no minimum height restriction at all!
Be in good health, as evidenced by a medical certificate.
- You will also be required to pass a medical examination. This includes a chest x-ray and drug test, as well as a hearing test, eye test and an electrocardiogram (ECG).
- You must have no record of abusing alcohol or drugs in the past three years.
Be a good swimmer
You must be able to swim 50 metres unaided, tread water for 2 minutes and swim 25 metres in breaststroke, butterfly, or backstroke.
