Traffic Officers are fully trained, sworn-in police officers that handle traffic-related occurrences such as directing traffic, managing accidents, administering federal traffic funds, and educating the public on laws and safety requirements.
What steps should I take to become a traffic officer?
You must be hired or appointed as a trainee (permanent or contract) by a Provincial Department of Transport, a Municipality, or a Government Agency such as the Road Traffic Management Corporation in order to become a Traffic Officer.
Basic training for traffic cops in South Africa may only be obtained as a trainee at a Traffic College through a Traffic Department.
The following are the criteria for becoming a Traffic Officer:
Minimum educational qualification of matric or grade 12 or equivalent.
Driving license type B (manual transmission).
There is no criminal record.
A medical certificate proving that a person can engage in vigorous activity.
Applicants must be no older than 35 years old.
If you satisfy the aforementioned qualifications and are hired as a traffic officer trainee, you will be sent to one of the 14 traffic colleges designated by the Minister of Transport.
How many years does it take to become a traffic officer?
The selected candidates will be required to participate in a three-year training program. The training will be held in Gauteng Province or any other acceptable training location selected by the RTMC.
