How to Apply for Hajj in South Africa

Minimum application age

An individual may only apply for Hajj once he or she has achieved the age of 15. However, applicants are only eligible for accreditation after they attain the age of 18.

Citizenship or permanent residency

To apply through SAHUC, all applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents. SAHUC will not give accreditation to foreign nationals or expats.

Women’s Mahrams

A valid mahram is an applicant’s husband or someone she is not permitted to marry under Islamic law. For example, father, son, grandchild, brother, uncle (parents’ siblings), grandfather, nephew (parents’ sons), son-in-law.

The mahram must be at least 18 years old.

If a girl is over the age of 45 and traveling with a group of ladies, the Shafi’i math’hab enables her to conduct her fard hajj without a mahram.

A hajj operator or group leader will not be recognised as a valid mahram unless he meets the criteria outlined above.

More information on the mahram

The main applicant is always the person functioning as mahram (male only).

A mahram who has previously attended hajj may be a mahram to a female relative and must state this on the application.

The mahram will be related to all female members of the family. The “Add Member” button should be used to add family members to an application.

If the applicant is a female 45 years or older who follows the Shafi’i math’hab and plans to travel without a mahram, she should pick “individual” and then “above 45 years of age” during the registration procedure.

If the applicant picks “husband and wife” or “family of two,” the two candidates will be linked, and their time and score will be averaged.

If SAHUC judges that the mahram system has been abused, the registration and accreditation may be terminated.

Can South Africans practice Umrah?

All foreign pilgrims are now permitted to enter Saudi Arabia for Umrah without first providing a negative PCR or quick antigen test result. All visitors with visit visas must have medical insurance to cover any COVID-19-related treatment expenditures while in the country.

Can you perform Hajj without an agent?

Umrah pilgrims can now obtain Umrah visas without the assistance of an agent, which means that the entire process can be completed without the involvement of an agent. All Hajj season preparations for a million pilgrims this year have been completed. Ideal programs are in place to provide better health services to pilgrims.
