To become a medical aesthetician, you must first complete rigorous training. Begin by enrolling in a skincare program at a regular cosmetology school that has been approved by your state’s board of cosmetology. The length of training varies, but cosmetology school programs can take up to nine months.

General aesthetics certificate and associate’s degree programs are also available in vocational schools. Following completion of a general aesthetics school, you may need to pursue extra advanced training to specialize in medical aesthetics. This can be accomplished on the job or through an additional training session. Medical aesthetics certificate and associate’s degree programs are also available, but they are significantly less frequent than general aesthetics programs.

Classes in salon management, physiology, aesthetician laboratory, skin illnesses and diseases, advanced themes in aromatherapy and aesthetics, and cosmetic chemistry are common. Additionally, if your aesthetics program does not provide them, consider taking additional college science classes in anatomy and biology to prepare for the medical parts of your work.

Get a License

Before offering professional care to customers, medical aestheticians must be licensed. The state in which you live may have different licensing requirements. Many states just require general aesthetician licenses, and your practice as a medical aesthetician would be governed by the licensing of the physician or institution that hired you. You must be at least 16 years old and a graduate of a state-approved aesthetics program to obtain a general aesthetics license. You must pass a state-administered licensure examination, which may include oral, written, and practical components. You may be required to renew your license within a certain time limit.

Get a Medical Aesthetician Credential Medical aesthetics certificates are accessible to you after graduating from a certified cosmetology school. These programs are typically offered by independent training providers and organizations rather than schools or colleges. Advanced skincare methods, skin nutrition, clinical skincare applications, Botox, rosacea, and medical resurfacing treatments will all be covered. You will have the opportunity to work with real clients under supervision. To receive certification after completing such a program, you must pass a certification examination.

What Are Some Alternative Careers in the Same Field?

Medical aestheticians employ some of the same therapeutic techniques as skincare professionals in cosmetology clinics. Their clientele, however, is likely to range in terms of urgency and intensity. Other cosmetic techniques that cosmetology skin care specialists may develop include hairdressing and manicure/pedicure treatments.

What exactly does a medical esthetician do?

Medical estheticians apply their skincare knowledge and talents in a medical environment.

Their primary responsibility is to teach patients how to care for their skin while undergoing medical treatment for a variety of diseases and ailments that might affect the appearance of skin.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Job as a Medical Esthetician?

After graduating from high school, medical esthetician school can be finished in nine months to a year. State licensure or certification may take several months to obtain.
