A closed bank account, a new Capitec card, a SIM you no longer use — any of these can silently block your SASSA grant. Updating your banking details is not complicated, but the process is different depending on which grant you receive. Getting it wrong costs you a month’s payment.
First: Which Method Applies to You?
SASSA treats the SRD R370 grant and permanent grants (Old Age, Disability, Child Support, etc.) very differently when it comes to updating banking details. The SRD grant is managed entirely online. Permanent grants require a physical visit to a SASSA office. Using the wrong method wastes time and risks a delayed payment.
Permanent grant beneficiaries — including Old Age, Disability, Child Support, Foster Care, and Care Dependency grants — cannot update banking details online or over the phone. SASSA requires biometric verification in person. This is non-negotiable and cannot be bypassed.
Method 1: SRD R370 Grant — Change Banking Details Online
The SRD R370 grant is designed to be administered entirely digitally. SASSA’s SRD portal allows you to update your bank account, switch payment methods, or change from cash collection to a bank deposit — all without leaving home. You will need your registered cellphone number and your 13-digit South African ID number.
Open your browser and navigate to srd.sassa.gov.za. Do not use any other website. Choose South African ID Holder or Asylum Seeker / Special Permit Holder depending on your status.
Scroll down on the homepage until you see the section labelled “How do I change my banking details?” Click on it to expand the option.
Type your ID number carefully into the box provided. This must match the ID number you used when you originally applied for the SRD grant.
SASSA will immediately send a 6-digit one-time PIN (OTP) to the cellphone number linked to your application. Enter this OTP and click Verify Pin. The OTP expires quickly — do not delay.
After verifying the OTP, SASSA sends a second, unique SMS to your number containing a secure link. Open this link on your phone. This link is personal and cannot be shared or forwarded.
On the banking details page, provide your: bank name, account type (savings, cheque, or transmission), account number, and branch code if required. You can also select an alternative payment method such as Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, or the Moya App.
Double-check every digit before clicking Submit. A typo in your account number means your payment goes missing. Once submitted, SASSA will send a confirmation SMS within 1–2 days. Processing takes 3–5 working days.
You can also update SRD banking details via the Moya App (available on Android and iOS). Open the app, tap SASSA Services, then Update Banking Details, and follow the prompts. The app also shows your upcoming payment date once changes are saved.
Method 2: Permanent Grants — Change Banking Details In Person
If you receive the Old Age Pension, Disability Grant, Child Support Grant, Foster Care Grant, or Care Dependency Grant, you must visit your nearest SASSA Local Office to change your banking details. SASSA requires in-person biometric verification before making any changes to a permanent grant payment account.
You need your original green ID book or smart ID card, plus proof of your new bank account (see the Documents section below). Do not go without these — you will be turned away.
Go in person. Call 0800 60 10 11 (toll-free) to confirm your nearest office address and operating hours before travelling, especially in rural areas where offices may have limited days.
At the counter, tell the SASSA official you want to update your banking details. They will give you the Consent Form for Bank Payment (also called the Payment Method Change Form). Fill it in completely.
Hand over your ID and bank proof to the official. They will cross-reference your ID against the Department of Home Affairs database and verify the bank account details with the bank. Biometric checks (fingerprint) may be required.
Before you leave, request a stamped copy of your completed consent form as proof of submission. This is your reference document if there are any delays or disputes.
SASSA sends your new details to the bank for verification. This process can take up to 21 working days. If the change is submitted before the 19th of the month, it should take effect in the following month’s payment cycle. After the 19th, the old account will receive one more payment.
What Documents You Need
The documents required differ slightly between the SRD online process and the permanent grant in-person process. For the online SRD process, you only need access to your registered cellphone. For permanent grants, bring the following to the SASSA office:
SASSA grants can only be paid into a bank account registered in the name of the beneficiary. This is a firm rule — not a guideline. Even if a family member or caregiver manages the grant, the account must be in the recipient’s name. There are no exceptions.
Banks Accepted by SASSA in 2026
SASSA accepts grant payments into accounts at the following South African banks. TymeBank has become popular among SASSA beneficiaries due to its zero-fee structure and reports of faster payment disbursement on some grant types.
For SRD grant recipients, you can also choose a cash payment option at retail partners instead of a bank account: Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Boxer, Checkers, and Usave are all accepted collection points. If you choose the cellphone money transfer option, your registered SIM must be RICA-compliant and registered in your own name.
Deadlines and Processing Times
Timing your request correctly is the difference between having your change apply this month or waiting another full payment cycle.
| Grant Type | Submit Before | Processing Time | Takes Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| SRD R370 Grant (online) | At least 10 days before payment date | 3–5 working days | Next approved payment cycle |
| Old Age / Disability / Child Support (in person) | Before the 19th of the month | Up to 21 working days | Following month’s payment |
For permanent grants, SASSA has officially stated that banking detail changes must be submitted before the 19th of each month to take effect in the next payment cycle. Miss this date, and your old account receives one more payment before the switch applies.
For SRD grants, changes do not affect payments already scheduled for that month. If your current month’s payment is already in processing, the new account details will only apply to future approved payments. This means there may be a one-cycle gap — plan accordingly.
Note also that SASSA limits how frequently you can change SRD banking details. You can update your SRD banking details once every three months. This restriction is in place to prevent fraud.
Watch Out for Banking Detail Scams
Grant payment fraud is widespread in South Africa. Criminals specifically target beneficiaries around banking detail update processes, posing as SASSA officials via WhatsApp, phone calls, and fake websites that mimic the official SASSA portal.
How to protect yourself
- ✓Only use the official website: srd.sassa.gov.za — not .com, not .net, not any other variation
- ✓SASSA will never ask you to update banking details via WhatsApp message
- ✓SASSA staff will never call you and ask for your OTP or PIN over the phone
- ✓Never share your secure SMS link with anyone — it is unique to your number
- ✓If someone at a SASSA office asks for money to process your change, report them immediately to 0800 60 10 11
- ✓Verify that any SASSA official helping you in person has a visible staff ID badge
- ✓After updating, check your next payment lands in the correct account before assuming the change worked
If the SMS Link Doesn’t Arrive or the Website Is Down
The SASSA SRD portal is heavily trafficked and can experience downtime, especially around payment periods. If you do not receive the OTP SMS or the secure link, try the following before assuming there is a problem with your application.
Wait at least 15 minutes — SMS delivery can be delayed on congested networks. Check that your phone is connected and has signal. Try again during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening). If the link still does not arrive after two attempts, call the SASSA helpline on 0800 60 10 11 and explain the situation. They can confirm whether your number is correctly registered and assist with next steps.
If the cellphone number linked to your SASSA application is no longer active, you will not receive the OTP. For SRD grants, update your phone number at the SASSA SRD contact details page before attempting to change your banking details. For permanent grants, visit your SASSA office with your ID to update contact information.
The Bottom Line
The process splits cleanly into two paths. SRD R370 grant holders update their banking details online at srd.sassa.gov.za — no office visit, no paperwork, done in under 10 minutes with your ID number and registered phone. Permanent grant holders — Old Age, Disability, Child Support, and others — must visit their nearest SASSA Local Office in person with their ID and proof of bank account, and submit before the 19th of the month to avoid a missed cycle.
Changes to SRD banking details take 3–5 working days. Permanent grant changes can take up to 21 working days. Submit early, keep your stamped form, and confirm your next payment lands correctly before considering the process complete.
