ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – MBAWC
The Master Builders and Allied Trades’ Association, Western Cape (MBAWC), founded in 1891, is the oldest organization of its kind in South Africa. Affiliated with Master Builders South Africa (MBSA), the MBAWC aims to uphold the reputation of the building industry and attract investment in the sector.
With a membership of approximately 400 companies in the Western Cape, including building products, subcontractors, builders, and merchants, the MBAWC ensures its members maintain a strong reputation and encourages continued investment in construction projects.
ABOUT THE MBAWC BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
The MBAWC is offering bursaries for the academic year in the Built Environment sector. The following fields of study are covered:
University Degree studies:
- Civil Engineering (BSc)
- Construction Studies (BSc)
- Construction Management (BSc (Hons))
- Quantity Surveying (BSc (Hons))
- Project Management (MSc)
- Masters studies (subject to motivated application)
- and other related fields
University of Technology National Diploma (Non-NSFAS focus) studies:
- Construction (Extended) (Diploma)
- Construction (Diploma)
- Construction (Advanced Diploma)
- Construction Health & Safety (Advanced Diploma)
- Quantity Surveying (Advanced Diploma)
- Master of Construction
- and other related fields
MORE ABOUT THE MBAWC BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE & SELECTION
The bursary covers tuition fees for one academic year, renewable based on satisfactory academic performance. Payments will be made in two installments to the tertiary institution, with the first installment released after funding approval and the second installment subject to mid-year performance review.
Successful candidates will be notified by 13 February and must respond within three working days to accept or decline the offer.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MBAWC BURSARY
To be eligible for the MBAWC Bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- South African citizenship
- Completion of Matric at a school within the MBAWC area of jurisdiction
- Intention to study or currently studying one of the Built Environment qualifications listed for
- Enrollment in the first year or higher year of study
- Study at a recognized tertiary institution in the Western Cape province
- Not qualifying for NSFAS funding (household income exceeds the NSFAS requirement of between R350,000 and R700,000 per annum)
- Not qualifying for any other bursary or support from a SETA/CETA
- Preference given to employees of MBAWC member companies or their family members
- Preference given to applicants employed by a member company compliant with the BIBC benefit system for at least 24 months uninterrupted
Submit the following compulsory supporting documents along with your completed application form:
- Photograph (recent, passport-sized) attached to the application form
- Certified copy of ID document
- Certified copy of the most recent academic record/results
- Proof of acceptance at a tertiary institution (on institution’s letterhead)
- Motivational letter supporting your application (see application form for further details)
- Affidavit confirming parents’ or guardians’ income exceeds the NSFAS funding cap (see application form for further details)

CLOSING DATE FOR THE MBAWC BURSARY
The closing date for applications is 20 January. It is recommended to submit your application before the deadline to ensure consideration.
