About Mhlathuze Water:
Mhlathuze Water (MW) is a state-owned entity established in 1980. It operates under the Department of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation of the South African government. MW provides bulk water services, including raw (untreated) water, clarified (partially treated) water, purified water supply, industrial and domestic wastewater disposal, and scientific services. The organization serves citizens in a sustainable and affordable manner, sourcing its water supply from the Mhlathuze River, Lake Mzingazi, and Lake Nsezi.
MW is headquartered in Richards Bay and primarily operates in KwaZulu-Natal, focusing on municipalities such as Umkhanyakude District Municipality, King Cetshwayo District Municipality, and Zululand District Municipality. Some of MW’s major clients include the City of uMhlathuze, Richards Bay Minerals, Foskor, and Mondi.
About the Mhlathuze Water Bursary:
Mhlathuze Water is offering bursaries for the 2025-2026 academic year to students pursuing studies in the water sector and related fields. The bursaries cover undergraduate and postgraduate studies in various fields, including Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Marketing, Information Systems, and more.

- Administered by Mhlathuze Water in partnership with the Energy and Water Sector Education and Training Authority (EWSETA).
- A total of 20 bursaries will be awarded.

Bursary Coverage:
The bursary covers the following expenses:
- Tuition fees
- Approved accommodation costs
- Books and stationery (as per the institution’s mandatory list)
- Meals (allocated after covering the above expenses)
Eligibility Requirements:
To be eligible for the Mhlathuze Water Bursary, applicants must meet these minimum requirements:
- South African citizenship
- Age under 25 years old
- Completed Matric or equivalent
- Full-time enrollment in one of the specified fields at a recognized South African university or university of technology
- Strong academic performance with a minimum of 70% in current studies
- Demonstrated financial need
- Preference given to students from previously disadvantaged communities (including youth, black individuals, women, and people with disabilities)
- Preference given to students residing in communities within the supply area of Mhlathuze Water in KwaZulu-Natal, although students from other regions may apply.

- South African ID document (certified copy, not older than 3 months)
- Matric certificate or qualification (certified copy)
- Full academic record (if currently studying, on institutional letterhead, certified copy)
- Proof of application and/or provisional acceptance at a university or TVET college (if available, on institutional letterhead).

The closing date for the Mhlathuze Water Bursary is 4 March 2025-2026. Late applications will not be accepted.
