ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – PRF
The Poliomyelitis Research Foundation (PRF) is a non-governmental organization founded in the late 1940s with a commitment to conducting research into poliomyelitis (polio) and developing medical virology within South Africa. The foundation is governed by senior virologists, members of the industrial and business sectors, and a Scientific Advisory Panel comprising virology heads of departments from universities across South Africa.
PRF provides funding for deserving students through bursaries, research grants, travel grants, and fellowships. Since 1977, the foundation has granted over R144 million in research funds, with over R44 million dedicated to bursary grants.

The Poliomyelitis Research Foundation (PRF) is offering bursaries for the 2023 academic year to students pursuing postgraduate studies (BScHons, MSc, and PhD) in virology research.

The duration of the bursary award will depend on the level of qualification being pursued. Masters students may receive up to 2 years of bursary support, and PhD students may receive up to 3 years of bursary support, unless exceptional circumstances apply.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR POLIOMYELITIS RESEARCH FOUNDATION (PRF) BURSARIES
To be eligible for the PRF bursaries, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Be a South African citizen or a permanent resident in South Africa
- Be studying towards one of the postgraduate virology qualifications mentioned
- Not be employed full-time
- BSc (Hons) and MSc applicants: Have achieved a minimum overall average of 60%
- BSc (Hons) applicants: Preference will be given to previously disadvantaged students
HOW TO APPLY FOR PRF BURSARIES
Applications must be submitted online through the respective application forms provided on the PRF website for BSc (Hons), MSc (new and renewal), and PhD (new and renewal). After completing the online application, the form must be downloaded and submitted along with the required documents.
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your application:
- Bursary Application Form
- Curriculum Vitae
- Academic Record
- Proof of Degree Registration
- Completed Grants Application Signatory Form (specific to each bursary category)
- Proof of completion of a BSc degree (for MSc applicants)
- Supervisor Progress Report (for PhD renewal)

CLOSING DATE FOR PRF BURSARIES
The closing dates for applications are 28 February and 15 September . Late applications will not be accepted.
