SASSA Status Check 2026:
How to Check Your Grant
Online, WhatsApp and USSD
Every method that works in 2026 — step by step, in plain language. Which one is fastest, which works without data, which to use when the website is down, and what to do when your status makes no sense.
There are six official ways to check your SASSA status in 2026. Most South Africans only know one or two of them — and when that method goes down, they assume their grant has a problem. It usually doesn’t. The method does. This guide covers all six, ranked from fastest to most reliable, so that no matter what device you have or how much data you can spare, you can always find out where your grant stands.
This guide covers both the SRD R370 grant and all permanent grants — Older Persons, Disability, Child Support, Foster Care, and Care Dependency. Where a method works differently for SRD versus permanent grants, we say so clearly.
The online portal is the fastest method and the one with the most information — it shows your status, your specific payment date if one has been assigned, and any outstanding actions SASSA needs from you. It is the recommended first step for any status check.
- 1Open your browser and go to srd.sassa.gov.za — confirm the URL is correct before entering any details. The full address for the status page is srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status.
- 2Enter your 13-digit South African ID number exactly as it appears on your ID document. A single digit error will return no results.
- 3Enter the cellphone number you registered with when you applied. This must be the exact number linked to your application — not your current number if it has changed.
- 4Click Send PIN. An OTP will arrive on your registered phone. Enter it on the portal within a few minutes before it expires.
- 5Your current status — and your payment date if one has been assigned — will appear on screen. The official status page shows real-time information about your application, payment date, and approval status.
For permanent grants — Older Persons, Disability, Child Support — visit the main SASSA website at www.sassa.gov.za and navigate to the grant services section, or contact your nearest SASSA office.
Almost every person in South Africa uses WhatsApp daily. SASSA made it easy for applicants to check their status directly through WhatsApp — the method is quick, easy, and does not require you to visit the official website. It works 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and uses minimal data.
- 1Save the official SASSA WhatsApp number to your contacts: 082 046 8553. Only use this number from an official SASSA source — scam numbers pretending to be SASSA are widespread on social media.
- 2Open WhatsApp and start a new chat with the saved contact. Send the word “Hi” or “SASSA” to begin the conversation.
- 3The automated system will reply with a menu. Select “Status Check” from the menu of options. Follow the prompts exactly as they appear.
- 4Enter your South African ID number and the cellphone number registered with your application when prompted.
- 5The system will reply with your current month’s status and a payment date if your grant has been approved. If it shows any outstanding actions, address them immediately.
If you don’t receive a reply from SASSA on WhatsApp, try again after a few minutes or during working hours. Sometimes the response may be slow due to a high number of applications or network issues.
The USSD method is useful especially for people who do not have a smartphone and internet access. You just need a basic cellphone to check your SRD grant status. It works on any mobile network — MTN, Vodacom, Cell C, Telkom Mobile — and requires no data or Wi-Fi connection.
- 1Open the phone dialler — the same screen you use to make a call.
- 2Dial the official SASSA USSD code and press call:
- 3A menu will appear on your screen. Select your preferred language.
- 4Choose “Check status” from the menu. Enter your 13-digit ID number when asked. Your status will display on the screen.
The SMS method works on the most basic mobile phones and requires no data or WhatsApp. It is less commonly used than USSD but is a reliable fallback for beneficiaries who cannot get USSD sessions to work on their network.
- 1Open your phone’s messaging application — the standard SMS app.
- 2Type the following message exactly: STATUS [space] your 13-digit ID number. For example: STATUS 8001015009080
- 3Send the message to 32555. Make sure you are sending to the number 32555 — not a phone number that looks similar.
- 4Wait for a reply SMS with your current grant status. Response times vary — allow up to 30 minutes during busy periods.
SMS and USSD services may be network-dependent and could incur standard messaging charges, so use the official website when possible. If the SMS method consistently fails to return a response, use USSD or WhatsApp instead.
The Moya App is a South African zero-rated data application — meaning you can use it to check your SASSA status without spending any mobile data at all. Download the Moya App from the Google Play Store, open the app and click on “Services,” select the “SASSA SRD” option, and enter your South African ID number to see your SRD status.
- 1Download the Moya App from the Google Play Store. It is free and available on Android smartphones.
- 2Open the app and tap on “Services.”
- 3Select “SASSA SRD” from the services list.
- 4Enter your South African ID number when prompted. Your current SRD grant status will load — using zero data from your mobile plan.
The Moya App is particularly useful for students and beneficiaries who have a smartphone but are on limited prepaid data. Zero-rated access means the status check is completely free regardless of your data balance.
The helpline is the only method that connects you directly to a human SASSA agent who can look into complex issues — payment disputes, identity mismatches, and account problems that the portal cannot resolve on its own. It is toll-free and covers all grant types, not just SRD.
Have the following ready before you call: your 13-digit ID number, the cellphone number registered with your application, your application reference number if you have it, and the specific status or error message you are seeing. Best time to call is on Wednesday or Thursday mornings between 08:00 and 10:00 to avoid the high-volume peaks found on Mondays and at the start of each month.
For permanent grants — Older Persons, Disability, Child Support — the helpline is often the fastest resolution path when something has gone wrong, because office visits require travel and the online portal only covers SRD in full detail.

What Your Status Actually Means
Once you have checked your status using any of the methods above, here is what each result means — and the exact action it requires from you.
When the Status Check Isn’t Working
Make sure you are using the exact ID number and phone number linked to your original application — not a different number you may have switched to since applying. If your phone number has changed, you cannot access the portal until you update your contact details through SASSA. Try a different browser, clear your cache, or switch from your phone to a laptop. If the problem persists, use WhatsApp or USSD as your fallback.
If you have lost your registered phone number, follow the guide to update your phone number through SASSA. OTPs are sent to the number registered at the time of application. If you no longer have that number, the OTP cannot reach you and you must update your contact details at a SASSA office before the portal will work for you again. If the number is still active but the OTP hasn’t arrived, click Resend OTP and wait 2 minutes.
An MMI Code Error is usually due to high traffic on the telecommunications network. Wait 30 minutes and try again. Try an alternative code — if *134*7737# fails, dial *120*3210# or *120*69277#. If all three fail, switch to WhatsApp or the online portal. The error is on the network side, not your application.
An Approved status means your application has been confirmed — it does not mean the money has been released. Payments usually appear in your bank account within 2 to 3 working days after the official payment date. Check whether a payment date has been assigned in your status. If a payment date has passed and nothing has arrived, verify your banking details are correct on the portal before calling the helpline.
SRD eligibility is assessed monthly using data checks across government and financial systems, which is why a person may be approved in one month and declined the next. A decline in one month does not affect your eligibility in the following month. Check your status at the start of every month and appeal any month where you were declined within the 90-day window.

The One Rule That Changes Everything
Check your status at least once a week. The SASSA system sends SMS notifications for some updates — but not all. A status that changed to “Awaiting Documents” three weeks ago while you assumed everything was fine has probably already caused a delay in your payment. The students, parents, and beneficiaries who never miss a payment are the ones who check regularly, not the ones who assume.
All six methods in this guide are free or nearly free. The online portal requires data. The USSD codes require almost none. WhatsApp requires almost none. There is no excuse for not knowing your status this month — and every month from now on.
Share this page with any family member or community member who receives a SASSA grant. The method that works for a smartphone user may not work for an elderly beneficiary with a basic handset — knowing all six options means no one in your community has to miss a payment because they couldn’t reach the portal.
