Stellenbosch University Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing
Attention all nursing professionals: The South African Nursing Council (SANC) has mandated significant updates to the nursing programme, prompting an extensive redesign to align with these revised standards. This updated programme has been presented for accreditation to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), the Council on Higher Education (CHE), and is awaiting registration with both the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and SANC. We anticipate launching this newly structured programme once we secure the final accreditations and registrations from the aforementioned regulatory bodies.
Admission Requirements:
Candidates interested in this programme must fulfill the following prerequisites:
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing at NQF level 8, a four-year diploma in nursing, or a comparable nursing qualification at NQF level 7.
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (R174) in combination with a Diploma in Nursing: General Nurses (R171) and an Advanced Diploma in Midwifery (R1497).
- Be registered with SANC as either a Professional Nurse and Midwife at NQF level 8 or a General Nurse with a Midwifery qualification at NQF level 7.
- Have at least two years of experience as a Registered/Professional Nurse and Midwife, including recent specialty field experience within the last two years.
- Demonstrate computer proficiency, which is strongly advised.

This intensive programme spans a full academic year.
Programme Overview:
The curriculum aims to transform registered nursing professionals into adept nursing educators, specializing in their chosen fields. It will hone your teaching capabilities through experiential learning, encouraging independence while providing expert guidance. You will develop analytical, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving abilities through various learning methods, including:
- Independent learning with educator facilitation.
- E-learning platforms such as SUNLearn (http://learn.sun.ac.za).
- Case studies, interactive workshops, and other dynamic educational strategies.
- Direct application of theory in practical settings for comprehensive understanding.
Teaching Modalities:
Lectures are conducted in block sessions at the Tygerberg Campus or through telematic presentations as outlined in the academic calendar. The programme also includes simulation learning, clinical practice in SANC-accredited facilities specific to Stellenbosch University, and other forms of experiential learning.

Assessment Criteria:
