UCT Student Portal — Vula
Login with your UCT network username and password
Go to UCT Vula Portal →What Is the UCT Student Portal (Vula)?
Vula is the University of Cape Town’s official online learning management system, running on the open-source Sakai platform. Every registered student at UCT gets automatic access to Vula once enrolled. It is the single digital hub through which you access your course content, submit assignments, view grades, join tutorial groups, and receive important communications from your faculty.
Beyond coursework, Vula hosts student society sites, research group spaces, departmental resources, and collaborative workspaces. The UCTMobile app — available on Android and iOS — integrates directly with Vula and adds access to the Jammie Shuttle schedule, exam timetables, campus maps, PC lab availability, and your fee account through Student Finance, all from your phone.
UCT also runs a parallel administrative system called PeopleSoft, which handles registration, fee payments, applications, transcripts, and all official student administration tasks. Both platforms use the same network credentials — your UCT username and password — so once you are set up, navigating between them is seamless. If you are still at the application stage and want to understand how the UCT admissions portal works, our detailed UCT login and application access guide covers the full process end to end.
How to Log Into UCT Vula: Step-by-Step
Navigate to Vula
Open any browser and go to vula.uct.ac.za. You can also reach it from the UCT homepage at uct.ac.za via the Vula quick link. Use the official URL only — avoid bookmarked or third-party links that may be outdated.
Select “UCT Login”
Click “UCT Login” in the top-right corner of the Vula homepage. Guest users — such as those invited into specific course sites — should click “Guest Login” instead. Your guest username is the email address your account was created with.
Enter Your Network Username and Password
Your network username is your student number. Your password is the same one used for your UCT email — it was provided in your official Admission Letter, or you would have set it yourself via password.uct.ac.za. Passwords are case-sensitive.
Access Your Home Worksite
After logging in, you land on your personal Home worksite. From here you can access all your enrolled course sites, the notification centre, calendar, and administrative utilities. First-time users: click Profile in the left menu to update your details and set notification preferences.
⚠️ JavaScript Must Be Enabled
Vula requires JavaScript to run. If the page warns you about JavaScript being disabled, go to your browser settings and enable it before logging in. Chrome and Firefox give the best experience on both desktop and mobile.
UCT Portals at a Glance — Which One Do You Need?
Students regularly confuse UCT’s different systems. Here is a clear breakdown of what each platform is for:
| Platform | URL | Used For | Login |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vula (eLearning) | vula.uct.ac.za | Courses, assignments, resources, grades, announcements | Network username + password |
| PeopleSoft (Student Admin) | applyonline.uct.ac.za | Applications, registration, transcripts, fee account, results | UCT username + password |
| Password Self-Service | password.uct.ac.za | Reset or update your network password | Student number + OTP to mobile |
| UCT Email (Outlook) | mail.uct.ac.za | Official UCT communication — applications, results, admin | Network username + password |
| UCTMobile App | App Store / Google Play | Vula, Jammie Shuttle, timetables, campus maps, fee account | Network username + password |
How to Register at UCT via PeopleSoft
Academic registration at UCT is done entirely online through PeopleSoft — the same system used to track your application. Your registration task is located under the “Tasks” tile once you log in. Registration windows differ per faculty, so always confirm your specific dates with your faculty office.
📅 Key Registration Facts (Evergreen)
- All undergraduate students must be registered before the faculty deadline — late registration attracts a penalty of R2 000
- Students cannot register if they have outstanding fee debt from a previous year
- Registration steps 1–10 involve confirming personal details and accepting declarations
- Step 11 displays any holds on your account (fee debt, IAPO pre-registration for international students, academic advice holds) — these must be resolved before proceeding
- International students must complete remote pre-registration clearance (visa, medical aid, fee checks) before academic registration opens to them
- Curriculum change week follows registration — use PeopleSoft to add or drop courses during that window
Log into PeopleSoft
Use your UCT username and password at applyonline.uct.ac.za or via the link sent to your UCT email during the registration period.
Open the Tasks Tile and Resolve Any Holds
Check Step 11 of your registration task for any blocks. Fee debt, outstanding documents, or IAPO pre-registration holds will prevent you from proceeding. Resolve these first.
Select Your Courses (Step 12)
Use either the Programme Enrolment or Blank Shopping Cart method (depending on your faculty) to select courses from your curriculum planner. Humanities students require prior in-person curriculum advice before their Step 12 can be processed.
Confirm and Download Proof of Registration
Once registration is approved, download your Proof of Registration directly from PeopleSoft. This document is required by NSFAS, bursary providers, and certain accommodation applications.
How to Check Your UCT Results and Academic Transcript
UCT results are not published on Vula — they are available exclusively through PeopleSoft. This is the only system that will provide your official annual results. Your academic transcript and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) can also be downloaded directly from your PeopleSoft student account.
To access results: log into PeopleSoft → navigate to the Academic Records section → select View My Grades or Unofficial Transcript. For your official academic transcript, use the transcript request option in the portal.
📊 Exam Timetables
Exam timetables are available on both the UCTMobile app and via the PeopleSoft portal. They are also published on each faculty’s website as the exam period approaches. Always confirm via PeopleSoft or your faculty office as timetables can be updated.
UCT Fees: What You Need to Know and How to Pay
UCT tuition fees vary by course and faculty. Your fee account is managed entirely through PeopleSoft, where you can view your balance, upload bursary letters, and generate a pro-forma invoice for sponsors.
| Fee Item | Key Detail |
|---|---|
| First Tuition Payment | R34 500 (or full fee if lower) — due early February each year |
| Final Payment Deadline | 31 July each academic year — all fees must be settled |
| Late Payment Surcharge | 5% of the unpaid amount, charged as a once-off |
| NSFAS Shortfall (Residences) | NSFAS does not cover full accommodation costs — shortfalls have typically been R36 000–R45 000 per year |
| Payment Methods | EFT, credit card online, cash at Cashiers Office (Kramer Building), or Flywire for international payments |
| Bursary Letters | Upload directly on PeopleSoft via the Sponsor form as soon as confirmed |

Common UCT Portal Problems and How to Fix Them
⚠️ Wrong Password Error
Passwords are case-sensitive and shared across all UCT systems. Reset at password.uct.ac.za. Allow a few minutes after a reset for the change to sync across Vula, email, and PeopleSoft.
⚠️ My Course Doesn’t Appear on Vula
Your lecturer may not have published the course site yet. Courses only appear once the lecturer creates and activates the site on Vula. Contact your lecturer if the site is missing after the first week of term.
⚠️ Registration Hold on PeopleSoft
Holds at Step 11 block registration. Common causes: unpaid fees from prior year, missing IAPO pre-registration (international students), or outstanding academic advice. Resolve the hold first — then registration unlocks automatically.
⚠️ Vula Page Not Loading
Clear your browser cache and cookies. If you see a “page loading trouble” alert, click the “Re-launch in new window” link on screen. If the problem persists, switch browsers or devices. Email help@vula.uct.ac.za if it continues.
⚠️ Account Locked After Failed Logins
Multiple failed login attempts can lock your UCT account. Contact the ICTS Helpdesk on +27 (0)21 650 4500 or visit your faculty computer lab administrator for an in-person unlock.
⚠️ Cannot See Exam Results
Results are not on Vula — they are on PeopleSoft only. Log into PeopleSoft with your UCT credentials and navigate to Academic Records. If results are not available yet, check your faculty’s result release schedule.
