UKZN Richard AD Turner Bursary

ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – UKZN / RICHARD TURNER

The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) was established in 2004 as a merger between the University of Natal and Durban-Westville. It consists of five main campuses: Edgewood, Howard College, Medical School, Pietermaritzburg, and Westville. The university is dedicated to academic excellence, research, innovation, societal engagement, and entrepreneurship.

The Richard AD Turner Bursary Fund at UKZN was established in memory of Richard “Rick” Turner, who was assassinated during the apartheid era. The bursary fund is made possible through a generous bequest from Winifred Jane Turner, Richard’s mother. Richard Turner was known for his opposition to apartheid and his involvement with trade unions, which had a significant influence within the university community.

ABOUT THE UKZN RICHARD AD TURNER BURSARY – FIELDS COVERED

The University of KwaZulu-Natal is offering the Richard AD Turner Bursary Fund for the academic year. This bursary is open to Master’s degree students at UKZN who demonstrate student leadership credentials and proven involvement in community work with a focus on democratic endeavors. The scholarship supports Master’s level research that addresses issues of justice and freedom for all South Africans.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE UKZN RICHARD AD TURNER BURSARY

To be eligible for the bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Enrolling for Master’s degree studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal with research focusing on issues of justice and freedom for all South Africans
  • Demonstrable student leadership credentials
  • Involvement in community work highlighting democratic endeavors
  • Willingness to contribute to student leadership while holding the award
  • Field of expertise inclined towards trade unionism

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE UKZN RICHARD AD TURNER BURSARY

To apply for the bursary, download and complete the UKZN Richard AD Turner Bursary Application Form . Submit clear copies of the following supporting documents along with the completed application form:

  • Full detailed Curriculum Vitae (maximum 5 pages)
  • Most recent degree certificate
  • Full academic transcript
  • One or more referee reports commenting on leadership and community involvement
  • Master’s thesis/dissertation proposal (maximum 3 pages) OR a motivation for the chosen research area
  • Motivational letter explaining why the applicant should be considered for the scholarship (1 page)

Submit the application and supporting documents to the Financial Aid Advisor of your relevant college at UKZN. CLOSING DATE FOR THE UKZN RICHARD AD TURNER BURSARY

The closing date for the bursary application is 20 March. Applications submitted after this date will not be accepted.
