Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Quantity Surveying

This one-year postgraduate degree follows the undergraduate programme in Construction Studies and results in a professional qualification as a Quantity Surveyor. Quantity Surveyors work closely with other professionals on construction projects, and are responsible for the financial and contractual management of projects.


Aims of the Programme

To provide employable professional graduates to the Quantity Surveying Profession; to fully satisfy the criteria for accreditation in terms of the requirements of the South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession; the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors; and the Chartered Institute of Building .


Outcomes of the Programme

Upon completion of the BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying programme, the graduate is competent to:

  • undertake financial planning and control of new and existing facilities;
  • undertake property development and property portfolio management;
  • value property;
  • apply appropriate quantity surveying techniques to building and civil engineering projects;
  • perform appropriate professional quantity surveying management functions;
  • work effectively in teams; and
  • undertake research and produce reports.

Programme Structure

The minimum duration of the Degree Programme is one academic year of study.

A candidate shall complete approved courses with a value required to bring the total to a minimum of 164 credits and shall comply with all the prescribed curriculum requirements.

Entry Requirements

A person shall not be admitted as a candidate for the degree unless he or she:

  • is a graduate of the BSc in Construction Studies degree from this University; or
  • is the holder of any three-year bachelor’s degree of this, or any other university recognised for the purpose by the Senate as equivalent to the BSc in Construction Studies degree of this University; or has in any other manner attained a level of competence which in the opinion of the Senate is adequate for the purpose of admission.
  • a weighted average of at least 60% for all courses undertaken for a bachelor’s degree with results for deferred (but not supplementary) examinations to be taken into account.
