Tax rebates

A taxpayer is eligible to tax rebates, which are deducted from the amount of tax owed. The refunds have the effect of setting tax levels below which no tax is due.

The following rebates are applicable for the 2023 tax year (i.e., the tax year beginning on 1 March 2022 and ending on 28 February 2023):

For all natural people, the primary rebate is ZAR 16,425.

Secondary rebate: ZAR 9,000 if the taxpayer is 65 or older.

Tertiary rebate: ZAR 2,997 if the taxpayer is 75 or older.

Who is eligible for a tax rebate?

When you cease working, you have not exhausted your Personal Allowance.

You have overpaid on pension income or a lump sum payout from your pension.

An improper tax code was utilized, and an excessive amount of tax was deducted from your paycheck.

How long does a tax rebate take?

They will usually offer a tax credit within 8-12 weeks of receiving your application, though this can vary. You can delegate this operation to Taxback if you wish to double-check your tax refund.
