What Is a Tax Rebate in South Africa

Tax rebates

A taxpayer is eligible to tax rebates, which are deducted from the amount of tax owed. The refunds have the effect of setting tax levels below which no tax is due.

 

The following rebates are applicable for the 2023 tax year (i.e., the tax year beginning on 1 March 2022 and ending on 28 February 2023):

 

For all natural people, the primary rebate is ZAR 16,425.

 

Secondary rebate: ZAR 9,000 if the taxpayer is 65 or older.

 

Tertiary rebate: ZAR 2,997 if the taxpayer is 75 or older.

You have overpaid on pension income or a lump sum payout from your pension.
