The First National Bank of South Africa (“FNB”) was established in 1838 as the Cape of Good Hope Bank, a joint-stock bank. A group of merchants and traders who felt that there was a need for more banks in the country at that time formed it. The bank’s founders were John Buchanan, William Cowie and David Theron.
The current board chairperson at FNB is Michael Jordan while its CEO is Cas Coovadia.
It is one of South Africa’s “big four” banks which includes Standard Bank, Nedbank, Absa Group Limited and Capitec Bank Limited (formerly known as MMI Holdings Limited).
