Winter Cereal Trust Bursary

ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – WINTER CEREAL TRUST

The Winter Cereal Trust (WCT) was established in 1997 and consists of two trusts: the Winter Cereal Research Trust and the Winter Cereal General Trust. These trusts serve different functions within the winter cereal industry in South Africa.

The Winter Cereal Research Trust focuses on participating in research related to winter cereals, which include wheat, oats, barley, rye, triticale, and durum wheat. The aim is to contribute to research that benefits South Africa’s winter cereal industry. On the other hand, the Winter Cereal General Trust provides funding for research, including technical, industrial, and scientific research, specifically aimed at improving the production of winter cereals in South Africa.

In 2006, the Winter Cereal Trust initiated a bursary scheme to provide financial assistance to students in the small grains research industry.

ABOUT THE WINTER CEREAL TRUST BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

The Winter Cereal Trust (WCT) is offering bursary funding for the 2023 academic year. The bursaries are awarded to postgraduate students pursuing Masters and Doctoral studies in fields relevant to the Small Grains Industry. The research topics for theses must be approved by the Winter Cereal Trust.

The following bursaries are awarded by the WCT:

  • 10 bursaries each year for postgraduate students pursuing Masters or Doctoral qualifications in a Small Grains-related field.
  • 3 bursaries each year for final year undergraduate and/or honours students intending to pursue postgraduate studies in a Small Grains-related field, up to a minimum of MSc degree level (subject to fund availability).
  • Bursaries for postdoctoral studies may also be awarded (subject to fund availability).

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE WINTER CEREAL TRUST BURSARY

Applicants must meet the following minimum entry criteria to be considered for the bursary:

  • South African citizenship
  • Completed Matric
  • Black (African, Coloured, or Indian) ethnicity
  • Final year of undergraduate studies and/or honours degree studies
  • Intending to study towards a Masters or Doctoral qualification in the Small Grains Industry
  • Studying at a recognized and accredited tertiary institution in South Africa
  • Thesis topic approved by the Winter Cereal Trust
  • Nominated Mentor and Co-Promotor (if applicable) approved by the university and the Winter Cereal Trust

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE WINTER CEREAL TRUST BURSARY

Applicants should download and complete the Winter Cereal Trust Bursary Application Form available in PDF format. It is also recommended to read the Winter Cereal Trust Bursary Agreement and the Winter Cereal Trust Bursary Scheme Information before applying.

Submit clear copies of the required supporting documentation along with the completed application form. The documents include ID document, Matric certificate, details of postgraduate studies, recent color photograph, curriculum vitae, study proposal for research project, motivational letter, Mentor’s letter of support, Co-Promotor’s letter of support, proof of residence, and other funds available for studies.

CLOSING DATE FOR THE WINTER CEREAL TRUST BURSARY

The closing date for the bursary application is 31 August. It is important to submit the application before the closing date to be considered.
