What is A Level Equivalent to in South Africa

The average time to complete an A level (Advanced Level) certificate is two years. The combination of these two courses makes up an A level qualification, which is divided into the first year of AS (Advanced Subsidiary) studies and the second year of A2 level work.

What else would be considered an A Level certification?

As the counterparts of AS and A levels, Highers and Advanced Highers are offered. There are currently more than 60 available subjects, and you typically take four or five Highers subjects. The components of each Higher are units, and in order to earn the degree, you must pass each unit as well as the final exam.

How do A levels compare in South Africa?

The equivalent of a South African degree in a particular topic is thought to be an AS level matric by Universities South Africa, formerly known as HESA (www.usaf.ac.za) (Higher Education of South Africa). More specifically, the prerequisites for university study are four AS level courses and one GCSE course (the level of study that comes right after and before AS studies). Despite these formal equivalents, we believe—based on extensive teaching experience—that even AS level exams in foundational subjects like English and mathematics contain content that is more advanced than what can be found in local matric exams and task types that place a greater emphasis on a student’s ability to apply what has been learned to new problems rather than rote learning.

Where in SA can I study A levels?

A levels are offered by a variety of institutions in South Africa. Some of them, like the International School of Cape Town, provide traditional full-time education while others, like Cambrilearn, provide individualized online and distant learning opportunities. While Learning Unlimited, another institution, offers a more individualized curriculum, it nonetheless fully prepares students to take AS and A level exams in the disciplines of their choosing. The focus of Learning Unlimited is heavily on customization in order to meet the needs of all students, including those who are enrolled in school full-time but could benefit from additional fees, serious part-time students, homeschoolers, and bright students who actively seek intellectual challenges and stimulation.

Which universities in South Africa accept A levels?

All regional universities will accept International A levels as long as the combination of topics chosen complies with the requirements set out by Universities South Africa.

How are A-level exams conducted?

The A-level tests itself can only be written at authorized testing facilities, therefore students who want to take the exams must enroll at one. Exams are given in the appropriate center, and certified examiners mark the students’ papers. As stated in the answer to Question 1, getting A levels in a particular topic requires a two-year study program.

Are matric and A levels comparable?

A levels are significantly more intellectually sophisticated than a South African matric, as was mentioned in the response to Question 4 above. . It follows logically that A levels, a higher level of study requiring an additional year of study, must be much more sophisticated and difficult than matric because only AS levels are required for admission to local universities.
