UFS Natural and Agricultural Sciences (University Preparation Programme) Course
The University Access Programme (UAP), initially named the NEED Programme (an acronym for Need for Education and Elevation), was launched in the Bloemfontein area of the Free State Province in January 1993. The programme was crafted as a strategic response to educational disparities that prevented a number of deserving students from satisfying the entry prerequisites of tertiary education institutions. Through the UAP, aspirants holding University of the Free State (UFS) Admission Point (AP) scores between 18 and 24 are given a chance to ‘earn their place’ in higher education. Those who excel in the UAP can progress to further degree programs, with their achievements acknowledged as credits.
Over time, the UAP has transitioned from a traditional lecture-based approach to a more progressive resource-based learning strategy. This means students receive all essential learning materials from day one, obviating the need to externally source study materials like textbooks.
Initially starting as the Career Preparation Programme (CPP), it later evolved into the University Preparation Programme (UPP) and has since widened its reach. New locations for the programme included Bethlehem (1998), Kimberley (1999), Welkom and Sasolburg (2000), Oudtshoorn (2001), and expanded further to include Motheo TVET College in Bloemfontein and Maluti TVET College’s Kwetlisong Campus in Phuthaditjhaba in January 2017. With the expansion, two Higher Certificates have been introduced, accessible on the South Campus and aforementioned regional sites starting from January 2017. Additionally, since 2003, students with AP scores ranging from 20-24 are also catered for as ‘access’ students at the Qwaqwa Campus of UFS.
