List Of Postgraduate Courses Offered at Durban University of Technology, DUT
If you’re considering pursuing a Masters or Doctoral degree at a university, here’s a guide on the key steps and important considerations:
1. Identify Your Field of Study
Contact the Head of Department: If you already know your field of study, reach out directly to the relevant Head of Department (HoD). You can usually find a list of contacts on the university’s website.
Research and Postgraduate Office: If you’re uncertain about the specific department or need guidance based on your qualifications and interests, contact the university’s Research and Postgraduate Office.
2. Submit a PG1 Form
Initial Approval: After determining the appropriate department, you will need to complete and submit a PG1 form along with the required supporting documentation to the HoD.
Criteria for Approval: The HoD will assess whether you are a suitable candidate for higher degree study in the program, the viability of your proposed research topic, and whether the department can provide adequate supervision and facilities.
3. Registration Process
Complete Registration: Once the HoD approves, you will complete your registration through the relevant Faculty Office.
Commence Studies: After registration, you can start your studies. New students can register at any time during the year.
4. Registration Deadline and Degree Duration
Deadline for Counting Current Year: Registering after 31st March means the current year won’t count towards the minimum duration of your degree (as per Rule G25(2)(a)).
Expected Completion Time: Typically, a Masters degree is expected to be completed within two years, and a Doctoral degree within three years.
5. Annual Re-registration
Re-registration Deadline: For continuing students, the deadline for re-registering is the last working day in March each year.
Failure to Re-register: If you don’t re-register before this deadline, you may need to re-apply for admission.
Submission of Progress Reports: Both you and your supervisor must submit progress reports, usually before the end of the previous year.
6. University Rules for Registration
Rules for Masters Degree: For a Masters degree, you must register by the last working day in March for the current academic year to count towards the minimum duration (Rule G24(2)(a)). Late registration requires re-registration for the entire next academic year.
Rules for Doctoral Degree: For a Doctoral degree, registration must be done by the last working day of the University in March (Rule G25(2)(a)). Late registration will necessitate re-registration for the next two consecutive years.
7. Fees
Full fees are payable upon first registration, and a re-registration fee is applicable for each subsequent year.
