What Time Is It In South Africa?

Only 1 (does not account for seasonal daylight savings): South African Standard Time (SAST) is the time zone used by all of South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland, and Lesotho, according to Wikipedia. The time zone is equivalent to Central African Time and is two hours ahead of UTC (UTC+02:00).

Neither time zone observes daylight saving time. Pietermaritzburg is practically at the right solar noon position in SAST, with Johannesburg and Pretoria somewhat west at 28° E and Durban slightly east at 31° E. Solar noon occurs in this time zone at 30° E. As a result, most South Africa’s population experiences solar noon daily at around 12:00.

But the Western Cape and the western Northern Cape are different. Due to its location in real UTC+01:00, in South African Standard Time, all-terrain west of 22°30′ E effectively observes daylight saving time all year. As a result, Cape Town’s sunrise and sunset are later than elsewhere in the nation.

Some Sources argue that South Africa has two time zones, which are:

The offset for South Africa Standard Time (SAST) is UTC+2.

Eastern Africa Time (EAT) has a UTC +3 offset.

Johannesburg, for instance, uses the SAST time zone. In contrast, Marion Island observes the EAT time zone.
