If you have a driver’s license, you can only drive under the supervision of a licenced driver. The licenced driver must also possess a professional driving permit if the classification of the vehicle you are operating calls for one.
A learner’s licence is a document that attests to your proficiency in operating a motor vehicle and adhering to traffic laws. The 24-month lifespan of the learner’s permit cannot be extended.
For the various types of motor vehicles, various learner’s licences are issued:
Code 1: This is for a motor cycle with or without a sidecar, motor tricycle or quadrucycle. You must be 16 years or older on the date of the test in order to apply if the motorcycle’s engine does not exceed 125 cc and 18 years or older if it exceeds 125 cc.
Code 2: This is for a motor vehicle, including a minibus, bus or goods vehicle, with a gross vehicle mass not exceeding 3 500kg. You must be 17 years or older on the date of the test in order to apply.
Code 3: This is for a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle mass exceeding 3 500kg. You must be 18 years or older on the date of the test in order to apply.
How to get a learner’s license?
To schedule and confirm a test date, visit the nearby Driving Licensing Testing Centre (DLTC).
Bring the following items:
an identification card (ID)
two similar ID images in black and white (before you have photographs taken you should confirm with the DLTC how many photos they require)
Pay a reservation fee.
Proof of residence and mailing addresses, such as a utility bill. The owner of the utility bill, if it is not in your name, must make an affidavit stating that you reside at the address and attach the utility bill to the affidavit.
You must bring a letter from the ward councillor confirming your postal and residential addresses if you dwell in an informal settlement. The letter must bear an official date stamp.
Fill out the DLTC-available Application for Learner’s License form (LL1). A medical certificate form (MC), which is also accessible at the DLTC, must also be filled out if you are 65 years of age or older.
You can complete the paperwork and undergo an eye exam at the testing centre, or you can have one done there by a licenced optometrist.
You must study road signs, vehicle controls, and traffic laws in order to have a fundamental understanding of a motor vehicle and road signs before taking the learner’s permit test.
