Retail shop salaries vary from province to province and from employee to employee. As a result, it is hard to compare salaries amongst retil stores because each store has many jobs that must be taken into consideration.
The survey showed that the average compensation in the retail sector, which accounts for 18% of all employment in South Africa, is only R4,540.
With an average compensation of just R2,700, supermarkets paid the least, followed by restaurants with an average salary of R3,600 and hotels with an average salary of R4,400.
Most workers in restaurants (50%) and supermarkets (67%) make less than the minimum wage of R3,500 per month, or R20 per hour.
