Calitzdorp is a small town on Route 62 in the Southern Cape of South Africa. It is about 40km from Oudtshoorn, and 230km from George, in the Klein Karoo.
The town’s name is derived from Johan Christian Claasz Calitz, a farmer who received this land in 1825. Farmers began moving into this area in 1878 and settled on the banks of the nearby rivers. They planted fruit orchards, but the most important crop was grapes for wine production.”
The first hotel was opened by the 1930s, and later many more facilities were built to accommodate travellers, including a petrol station and post office.
