The South African government has recently changed the learner’s licence requirements to include a practical driving test as well as a theory knowledge test. This means that if you want to get your learner’s licence in South Africa, you will have to do more than just take a few driving lessons. Here’s how you can get your learner’s licence in South Africa if you are under the age of 18 and how it will work if you are over the age of 18.
What is a learner’s licence?
A learner’s licence is a document that allows you to drive with a qualified driver. You can only apply for the Learner’s License if you are 18 years or older and have never had a valid driving license before. The learner’s licence will be valid for two years and during this time, you must not accumulate over six demerit points, which will be removed from your record after the two-year period.
Steps To Get A Learners Licence
To apply for a learner’s licence, you will need to go to the Department of Transport Services (DOTS) and submit a completed application form with photocopies of your identification and proof that you are qualified. You will also need to take a theory test at an approved location. After this, you will be issued with an identity card which is valid for 18 months from the date it is issued. The DOTS office then sends out a notice of approval or rejection.
When Can You Take The Test?
An important thing to note is that learners are only allowed to drive between 5 am and 10 pm. If you are caught driving outside of these hours, you will be fined and charged with a traffic offence. You can take the test for a learner’s licence when you turn 17 years old or three months after obtaining your provisional driver’s licence.
