Spring onions are one of the first crops to be planted in your vegetable garden every spring. The only downside to growing spring onions, however, is that they are only produced during the early spring months (and sometimes into summer). If you’re interested in planting spring onions, read on to find out more about when and how to plant them in South Africa.

Choosing the right varieties

Choosing the right onion variety is important, as different types grow at different speeds and are more or less resistant to pests and diseases. Here are a few varieties that you might want to consider planting this spring

What if you want a fall crop?

If you want a fall crop, plant your onions in late summer. Make sure the ground is well-drained so it doesn’t become waterlogged and start rotting the roots of your plants.

When to plant spring onions in South Africa?

Spring onions, or scallions, are a type of onion that is harvested early in the spring before the hot summer months. If you live in an area with a temperate climate, you can plant them from January through April. Of course, this will vary depending on where you live and your region’s climate. For example, if you’re planting near a body of water, the soil may still be too wet during those months. In that case, wait until May or June to plant them.

Soil and other conditions to consider

Spring onions are best planted in the late fall or early spring. They will grow well on well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. There need to be adequate levels of nitrogen and phosphorus for them to grow properly. However, they do not grow well if the soil is too alkaline.
