Is There Another Lockdown in South Africa

South Africa has rejected a lockdown order to combat a new omicron strain of the coronavirus that the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified as a strain of concern. The South African leader, who raised the first option, instead called for calm. “We know that the coronavirus will be with us for a long time,” South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said in an address to the nation on November 28. “That’s why we need to find ways to deal with the pandemic while limiting disruption to the economy and ensuring continuity.”

Ramaphosa, who has criticized Britain, the United States and other countries for imposing travel restrictions on South Africa and other regional countries, has refused to tighten state lockdowns. This makes South Africa “Tier 1” of a five-lockdown strategy that includes mandatory face masks. No curfew until 04:00 and no gatherings of more than 750 people.

The first three severe restrictions in South Africa hurt the country’s economy, especially the urban poor and the unemployed. South African politicians seem unwilling to bear the financial costs of a new quarantine. Currently, countries rely on vaccines and testing as their main tools to prevent the spread of the virus. This strategy could be the beginning of a new era in the global fight against Covid-19.

Observation

In an effort to tackle a brand-new coronavirus strain called omicron, South Africa has rejected a shutdown order. Covid-19 has been identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a strain of concern. Politicians in South Africa don’t seem eager to foot the bill for a new quarantine.
