How to Qualify for Uif in South Africa

When your employer ends your employment, you can claim for benefits from the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).

The benefits are only available if you have contributed to the UIF while working. You cannot file a claim if you have quit, been suspended, or gone missing from work. If the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA) finds your resignation to be a constructive dismissal, you may file a claim.

To be eligible for assistance, you must first register as a job seeker. You must apply for UIF benefits as soon as you become jobless or within six months of losing your job.

For what reasons can you apply for UIF?

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) provides workers with short-term support when they become unemployed or are unable to work due to maternity, adoption, or parental leave, or illness. It also helps the dependents of a deceased contributor.

How long do you have to work to be eligible for UIF?

You must have worked as a contributor for more than four years to be eligible for the full credit days. The rates at which benefits are payable are determined by the benefit scale, which ranges from 38-60% for the first 238 credit days and then from 239 to 365 days at a flat rate of 20%.

Why is the UIF claim denied?

“Most claims are denied because employers fail to register their employees and declare them to be working for them.”
