Secunda is a fairly new town in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The preferred location for many miners to live is because of the coal that is produced in and around it.
A town was built to create a labour force for the construction of Sasol Two which makes synthetic fuel and petrochemicals.
The town now has 40,000 inhabitants. The Embhalenhle community is located nearby with an additional 245,000 people living there.
Over the past few years, the town has experienced a lot of growth because of expansions underway at the Sasol complex, and we expect more work in this area in the future.
Secunda has the highest chimney in the world. It only has three parts, and they’re all very big. The first part is a tower of 478 metres high. Then there’s an 872-metre high second part, and then at last, the final leg is an 880-metre tall torso of metal and brick with three. The windshield is 292 meters high with an internal diameter of 26 meters in order to contain a combustible cladding system and provide structural stability.
The chimney used wide and sharp rakes to provide a strong defence against the wind, as well as vertical walls for immobilizing or trapping fire. This chimney stood at about 70 feet high, making it one of the tallest free-standing structures in the southern hemisphere.
