The World Cup took place in South Africa from 11 June to 11 July 2010. The bidding process for hosting the tournament finals was open only to African nations.
South Africa was selected as the host for the 2006 World Cup Finals
The opening and final matches of the World Cup were played in 10 stadiums across nine host cities in Africa. The headquarters for the tournament was Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city.
Thirty-two teams qualified for the international round as a part of an open tournament in 2007.
In the first round of the tournament final, four teams competed in an all-or-nothing round robin style. The top two teams from each group proceeded to move on to the next round of games.
These 16 teams advanced to the knockout stage. In three rounds of play, positions were decided as to which teams would participate in the final.
In the finals, Spain won their first World Cup at the end of extra time today with a 1–0 victory over the Netherlands.
